What weight boxing Glove?

Thread Starter
Looking for a pair of Boxing gloves to give a boxing bag a bit of a workout. I know about 'hand wrapping' and that Gloves come in different weights. My research suggests the heavier the glove the more padding and protection. However I am interested are there any other reason I should go heavier or lighter. Thinking of either an 14oz or a 16oz.

For actual boxing, what weight you choose is often determined by your weight class.

I use 16 oz.

you want something to hand them to dry, you want a few sets of wraps, and you want a net bag to wash your wraps.

14 or 16.....does it really matter if you're simply hitting a punching bag?

i use 14s these days, but generally 16 is a good recommendation. More hand padding. If you're sparring (which it sounds like youre not), a bit of extra padding for the other guy's head, and a bit of extra coverage for your own when your guard is up. BTW the gloves from G&S Boxing in New York are supposed to be fantastic, and the best value offering around...I'd look into those before you just buy some crappy ones from a sports store that probably cost more.

16 oz is needed for sparring, and it's a good weight for hitting a bag and giving you a workout. You'll have fast hands after using 16's in training.

yup, true. When you take them off and put lighter weights or bag mitts on, your hands feel like they are flying.

16s should work well with a bag...

I use 16oz for sparring and bag work. I use them for push ups as well.
