I Need Help Finding a Second Job

Thread Starter
Last March, I had the extreme fortune of finding a job in one of the worst economies in decades. The position was in my field and the pay was good for someone just coming out of school. Unfortunately , I only work 30 hours a week, roughly 9-5 Mon-Thurs. I still get benefits and health insurance, which is awesome, but I'm left with Fridays off.

Basically, I want to find a second job to generate more income. Like I said, the pay is decent at my current position, but it could be better. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for supplemental income.

I was thinking of finding a temp agency, but I'm not sure many places would need someone one day per week. Originally, I was trying not to work evening or weekends, but some things have come up and I need to start saving money. Ideally, I don't want to work at Starbucks again, but that may have to be my backup plan. My other thought was to go back to working as a lifeguard/pool operator. I had done this for five years before grad school. I would need to get recertified, but that can be expensive. Hopefully I can find something else.

Any ideas?

Valet at a really nice place on Friday & Saturday nights. Make more than you would at Starbucks, for shizzle.

Are you jacked? Maybe you can become a bartender.

I've thought about bartending, but would I need experience in a restaurant? I heard you pretty much have to work your way up from the bottom.

good luck finding a second job and not wanting to work nights or weekends .

these are the times in the retail/service industry when people are needed most.

i don't know what you are looking to make but your best bet is some place with tips... sBux isn't horrible if you could work drive-thru [you get all the tips from the window right... or od oyu have to share?] .

valet isn't awful i'd think, nor would bartending either

you might get lucky if you know someone, or someone who knows someone who can put a good word in for you

in my experience finding a job with less than 20 hours of availability is hard.

Thanks robbie. I've pretty much accepted the fact I might have to work nights and weekends. I was just hoping I might find some menial data-entry type stuff on Fridays, so maybe I'll look into the temp agency. Bartending sounds like it could be a good plan, but I would definitely need to do my homework. I hear the bartending schools are pretty much a joke. I'd like to do valet, but my driving record is HORRIBLE. In my dream of dreams, I'd like to get something that will help my career, but I know that's going to be very difficult to find. I just applied for an Interviewer position with the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Crossing my fingers on that one, but we'll see. Oh, and I'm pretty certain they share the drive-thru tips at The Bux. At least that's what we did with the coin jar in the front.

People tip at Starbucks?

More than you would think. It's similar to a bar in some ways. We have our regulars who come in everyday. We tend to give them an extra shot, extra caramel, etc., and they give us a tip. In grad school, I didn't work at starbucks, but I was certainly a regular (doing homework). Many times I would get free coffee from the baristas I knew, so I would put a dollar in the jar.

Go work overnight shifts (either awake or sleep) in an assisted living care facility (group home). In my first two years of college, every second week, I would work the sleep shift from 11 p.m. on Friday to Saturday at 7 a.m., then awake until 3 p.m., go home, come back to sleep at 11 p.m., and then awake at 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thirty-six hours every second weekend. Sweet.

if i were you, i would go scour outlets and stores and make a list of places to call to find out what you can flip on ebay. once i tried calling every polo outlet in america it took me 3 hours to do only 5 states especially when you have to deal with employees who are not very thorough at searching what you are looking for, and i understand.

I already have a handful of stuff I'm going to flip on B&S. But is it really that possible to make money doing this? I'd love to do it as a hobby, but it doesn't seem all that likely to be lucrative. All I can picture is a mountain of clothes in my closet that I would waiting to sell.
