Does not knowing what the hell a LAN party is mean that I've never been to one, or that every party I go to *is* one?

A LAN-Party is when several persons (up to 1000+) persons (mostly young nerdy guys) meet up in a big, often dark hall, stuffed with network wiring. They all take their computers with them and spend several days and nights playing multiplayer computer games, download movies, porn and music, eat pizza and fastfood and sleep either on their keyboards or in sleeping bags between/under the desks (some have better accommodations though). Since nobody gives a damn about fashion and everybody wants to be as comfortable as possible in a smelly hall heated by several hundreds of bodies, shorts, T-shirt and sandals is the overwhelming fashion of choice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lan_party

Oh, wow, that kind of LAN...OK, nope, I'm safe.

Should I wear my cargo shorts to this?

When it's hot and I just don't give a damn, I wear my cargo shorts with flip flops and a loose white T-shirt. I don't believe I've ever been confused with a computer nerd yet.

Cargo shorts can work but as we have pointed out sandles and trainers are not the way to go. Along with the before mentions thongs (flip-flops for the Americans of the board) I have found that volleys and obviously vans equivlent work very well with cargo shorts.

I used to hate them until I saw two gorgeous pairs from Moschino and Versace that took a different structural approach to traditional cargo pants. The fact that they were jet black helped me. So, I love them now! As someone noted above, more acceptable in Australia given year round sunshine (even in Autumn today it is close to 30C!). Gaultier also makes some interesting styles.

Oh, I only ever wear sneakers with ankle sockettes when wearing cargoes. Yeah, alright, sometimes I will wear my black TOOL or Perfect Circle t-shirt if going to a gig (like the Stones last tuesday night!)! Hey, TOOL's new album is out soon - can't wait!

I always thought sneakers, like say a Nike Dunk High, went better with cargo than linen shorts?

Yeah, it's a better look, to be sure.

What are examples of these better structured and less sloppy looking cargo shorts?

I would try J. Crew. They tend to have all kinds of shorts styles, most of them are tailored and refined.

It's gorgously smoggy and warm in LA today, especially in Downtown so I'm wearing my fabric blocked Stussy cargo's. I'd highly recomend them, there fabric blocked in 3 different Black white ground plaid patterns and then overdyed beige. Definately different to the plethora of camo options out there.

Considering my attraction to skinny jeans at present I still love my shorts loose and it gives me a chance to break out the Dunks and Uptowns I don't tend too wear with jeans anymore.

Todays outfit:

Beige Multi-plaid Stussy shorts
Distressed Alternative Apparel 50 singles tee overdyed Ash (No graphic)
Nike AF1 Silver (2004 Olympic Edition)
A pair of those overtly feminine ankle socks that won't go with any other outfit but this.

Cargo shorts are sloppy, I call them "skorts" since they flare so much. When one item of clothing becomes the default choice for summer menswear, it's time to move on.

Most cell phones are small enough to fit in a normal pocket (or on your belt if you favor the road warrior style). I don't buy the excuse that the extra pockets are useful unless you're on a safari........

You think cargo shorts are too common (and I guess by extension, un-cool), yet you advocate clipping a phone onto your belt?? Dude!
