is printing arrests from the previous day common? it really rubbed me the wrong way when i found out about it

Good luck getting the paper to print that the charges were dropped. I also don't think there is anything you can do about it because the arrest record is public information.

Many places publish the arrest records for their town as form of social control. They hope that the shame of appearing in the local paper will keep people from committing a crime. I've mostly seen it used for people who were arrested for prostitution.

Truth is a defense to slander.

Having the charges dropped doesn't mean you didn't do it. So they don't need to issue a 'correction.' There's nothing to correct. On the bright side, most newspapers now require paid subscription to search their electronic archives after a month or two, so it may stop appearing in random Google searches within the year. A friend of a friend of the family was once in the paper for refusing to stop for a police officer -- she pulled over, then took off again. As she sped down the road, police in pursuit, she started taking off her clothes and tossing them out the window at the cop. Now that's not something you want to be in the paper for, I suppose. ~ H

Even if he didn't do it, the fact that he got cited for it is still true.

Of course. I kindof had the notion that he did, though. Now I wonder if he had been falsely cited, and say, went to court and proved this, yet lost a job opportunity specifically for the citation in the paper -- who might he have a cause of action against?

If you're really anal about this take an ad in the paper w. the correction. Of course this might only bring more attention to yourself.
