New Japanese Invention: the first alcohol-free beer

Although it probably won't be as well-received as when the Japanese introduced ice beer in the 80s, it looks like they have been the first to produce the world's first alcohol-free beer. If you are confused like I was about how this could be given non-alcoholic brands like Bucklers and St. Pauli's N.A., it's that those beers contain anywhere from 0.05 to 0.05% alcohol. The new Japanese technology provides us with 0.00% Hardly exciting news for anyone who expects a buzz, but possibly interesting to anyone on the wagon... http://sobermd.blogspot.com/2009/08/...free-beer.html

The new drink will hit the market Sept. 29 to compete with Kirin Brewery Co.'s Kirin Free, launched in April, and Asahi Breweries Ltd.'s Asahi Point Zero, which will debut Sept. 1. Stupid, but like many stupid things, it might just work in Japan. I wonder if Japanese girls are stupid enough to get drunk off of this.

Actually, it's the alcohol that makes you piss so badly.

Suntory, as in the same company that makes the Japanese single malt? They distill and brew?

Correct and correct. They have a pretty wide variety of businesses including food and beverages (alcoholic and not), restaurants and the Japanese license for Haagen Dazs and Pepsi.

They make some excellent beers. Their Premium Malt's is one of my faves.

I don't really think N.A.s taste much like real beer, but I do think they're great for nights out at the bar when you want to take it a bit easy or have to drive, but still don't want to walk around with a plastic cup full of water or iced tea and don't want to have to answer a bunch of stupid questions. I drink them kind of frequently these days, as I shoot in a pool league where I'm at the bar for 3-4 hours on a Thursday and it's a good pacer in between real drinks or just a good alternative for those days where I have a morning meeting or something the next day. Or I just don't feel like tempting a DUI charge.

BTW, what is it with bars always putting NA drinks in plastic cups? If I can have a jack and ginger in a pint glass, why can't I have a tonic water in a pint glass? Shoot, the sober guy isn't going to be the one to break the glassware.

If they made nonalcoholic beer that tasted like Guinness, maybe I could see your point. But generally NA beer tastes like complete swill.

Largely to differentiate between those with booze and those without.
