Furniture for Small Timers?

So we just bought a place and our current furniture probably won't cut it for very long. It's not terrible by any means, and the quality is quite good (old leather in a cream/light pink hue from the early 90's), but we want something new. StyleForvm loves $7,000 couches and $1,500 chairs; sadly, this does not compute with our finances at this time. We don't want to go all Ikea (again), so are there $1,000 sofas and $200 chairs out there that are of decent build quality and looks? I like a lot of the Eames stuff, and Foo's Knoll sofa is quite nice. We aren't looking for "bulky" furniture, and would instead like something timeless and mostly minimal. Basically, any advice on sofas, chairs, tables (dining, coffee) and accessories (lamps, etc.) would be great. Many thanks, SF.

Your grandfather's chair looks nice. Can you get that: Or did you sell it for coke money?

I don't know what's in your area, but I think the Danish modern stuff is not in very high demand right now, and I think it looks rather nice. I say it's not in demand... I'm not really sure if it is or not... but I do know that there's a place near me that has tons of the stuff for pretty darned cheap, and I'm inferring from the pricing that it must not be all that popular. In case you ever get down this way (Baltimore), here's their website: http://www.homeanthology.com/

I bought a table/desk chair this weekend for $1. Had a $5 sticker on it though.

Will sell to you for $150 though. That's $50 less than you want to pay!

Vintage, vintage, vintage. The Danish MCM idea is very good.

Sweet, thanks all. Any particular key words to search Craigslist/eBay/the Internets for? Other than "vintage Knoll" and "vintage Eames".

If I were a small timer (and I certainly self identify as such) I would look for quality pieces to re-upholster. So you spend seventy-five or a hundred dollars for the right couch or chair and then another one to three thousand for the upholstery. But it's exactly what you want and what you need. A bargain.
Of course you need to know what you're looking for.

University auctions are full of steelcase tanker desks, old chairs, and other similar goodies.
