My next scotch....

Thread Starter
Its getting cooler, the days are getting shorter, and as a result Im saying goodbye to my summer Gin and Tonic and switching back to scotch for the cooler months.

Im looking for advice on what should be my next scotch purchase though. I started drinking it this time last year, following the Johnnie Walker train.... I started with Red, and after trying black, couldnt drink red anymore. The same thing has happened with green..... its absolutely delicious, but it's hard going back to black. However, the cost of scotch has made me tread lightly. I find black is now my standby, simply because it's fairly cheap in comparison to the others. However, Im still willing to broaden my horizons, and Im looking for a reccomendation on a good affordable (university budget) single malt scotch.

Thanks,

L.R.

Laphroaig 10 year can be found quite affordably depending upon your location, and it is both excellent and intense. I usually keep a bottle around for pairing with cigars.

^^ Very good advice! You might also like to try Ardbeg, which is also an affordable Islay.

Dude. On a Uni budget go for Cragganmore 12 at like 35 bucks. It's not peated heavily at all, so its an excellent choice for the winding down months of summer when Ardbeg just lies too heavily. There's a scotch for every season, no need to rush things. Credentials:

Praline Liqueur brings your taste into question, although Cragganmore is a nice drink. Balvenie, or Dalwhinnie might be more appropriate though for someone just starting out with single malts, especially since they are cheaper.

No, have to back Hunts here. The 12 or Distillery will also lend an extra air of credibility to your ambitions. I'm not going to say the double wood 12 Balvenie is not a great QPR, but everyone has that. Also consider the Bunnahabhain. Great price, low market penetration, again, a serious drink.

Some of the items on the bar are/were gifts from people who like to see them there. And I like to see them happy. I agree that Balvenie would be an excellent choice. In my area it isn't cheaper though, and Dalwhinnie 15 (long a favorite of mine) certainly isn't. ~ H

Laphroaig is awful peaty-tasting. Try Glen Ord for a nice smooth scotch.

Oban 14 Hunts - Where are you getting Cragganmore for $35? It's $50 a bottle down here.

I was just messing with you, but Praline is some nasty stuff.

Local place, but they don't ship. Can't say their other prices are awesome, though -- they're not.

Some single malt suggestions for the budget-minded (from unpeated to peated): Springbank 10yr Highland Park 12yr Ardmore Traditional Cask Talisker 10yr Laphroaig 10yr Ardbeg 10yr Cragganmore 12yr and Oban 14yr are also good choices (and fund the Diageo conglomerate... it is up to you how you feel about that) for a well balanced whisky, however I'd pick the Cragganmore over the Oban due to a distinct metallic note that many detect in the Oban's finish.

Go back to JW and actually taste the differences between them without chewing on the price tag.

Whoa, I thought that was only me...

Consider Aberlour 12 (or the 10, if it's still around where you are), or the old inoffensive standby Glenmorangie.
