Rehearsal dinner

You'd think that after standing up in 3 weddings in the past year, I'd know what to wear to a rehearsal dinner--but I've got another one this weekend, and I'm at a loss. I remember wearing a dark sweater, dress trousers, and black Gucci loafers to one of the dinners--is that appropriate? Can it be casual or should it be more formal than the ensemble I wore once before? I think the restaurant is only moderately expensive, if that helps. Thanks.

My 2¢, as someone about to get hitched: what with everyone getting all dressed up for the wedding itself, the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner should be a somewhat more relaxed affair. However, different couples (and different parents) won't necessarily feel the same way about it. The venue dictates dress to some extent; more critical is what the bride and groom will be wearing. So, you might ask them. Better yet, to spare them one more thing to think about, ask the best man or maid of honor. Finally, when in doubt, wear a jacket. Unless the rehearsal dinner is at KFC, you're at no risk of being overdressed.
