What do you do when you are walking towards someone? (you don't know them)

I'm sure all of you have gone through this at least once. You're walking down the street and you're approaching someone you have never met before. Do you make eye contact? Look straight; act as if they aren't there? Say a brief hello and keep moving? Give a quick smile?

Depending on my mood, all four can happen. Usually 1 or 3, though 2 would be up there also if a brief nod counts. In a related note, I think one of the more awkward situations around is when you recognize someone you know walking towards you (and they do the same to you) while you are still a significant distance away from each other. Do you keep eye contact for the 10-20+ seconds it takes before you are close enough to speak without yelling?

Well it's funny you say ask that. When ever I go visit my folks in VA everyone says hi/hello when you stare at them as you walk closer to them. I'm from NewYork so when you stare at someone for more than 2 seconds they usually say something that goes like this "what the f*&k are you looking at" lol. I guess it all depends on where you are. Just some advice , don't ever stare at someone in NY unless your ready to exchange words and possibly throwing down.

+1 Depending on an urban or rural setting.My wife tends to nod and smile at strangers who have made eye contact with her.She says it's because she is a country girl and thats what people do there.I say that she is in the city now and people here will think she is nuts if she does that!
