Holidaying in LA and Vegas

post #1 of 13

I'm thinking of staying in Vegas and LA for 7 nights each including hotel in May 2010 with friends. I've not been to USA before but one thing to note is that I don't drink alcohol nor gamble. I like good food but I probably won't be fine dining in Michelin restaurants each day.

I really want this to be an action packed holiday. These are the things I want to do so far:
- Go to these theme parks {Universal Studios, Raging Waters, Six Flags}
- Grand Canyon helicopter ride
- Quad Biking
- Indoor skydiving (in Vegas)
- Beaches. Most of the time chilling here but would like to try: scuba diving, snorkelling and jet sking at least once.
- National parks. Not sure which ones but Redwood and Yosemite look good... are they free?
- Probably check out some shows in Vegas as well.
- Whale watching
- Shooting range

Ah I forgot to mention but if I were to do every one of those things roughly how much would I be spending in dollars?

I know the helicopter ride is about £200.

If you don't drink and don't gamble and aren't going to fine restaurants, why even go to Las Vegas? And even if you did those things, 7 nights in Las Vegas is an excruciatingly long time to be there. I like Las Vegas and go a few times per year but 3 or 4 nights is about all I can take at one time.

You also might want to check some maps. Redwood and Yosemite are pretty damn far away from LA and LV. Also, I don't think May is whale watching season in So Cal.

Only cos I've been told Vegas is an amazing place to see and be even for non gamblers. But you're right I was told 4 days is just enough time so I might do 10 nights LA and 4 nights Vegas.

So if not Yosemite and Redwood which national parks would you recommend? Are they free?

Of course if you spend 7 nights in Vegas, you might start drinking and gambling.
If you're not into the club type scene in Las Vegas, try to plan your stay Sunday-Thursday.
Hotel rates are way lower than the weekends.

Yosemite and Redwood have entrance fees. It's not a whole lot. Look on nps.gov.
Dunno where to go instead. I'm not very familiar with California outdoorsey type stuff.

Nah I definitely won't drink or gamble it's against my religion.

But...
1 day Grand Canyon
1 day quad biking + indoor skydiving.

There's lots of evening shows from what I've heard.

Plus lots of free things to do on the strip (http://www.brightandloud.com/stuff-t...sides-gamble):

Free Stuff to do on the Strip:
* The Volcano at the Mirage
* The Fountains of Bellagio
* The Botanical Gardens at the Bellagio
* Caesars Palace Fall of Atlantis Show
* Freemont Street Experience
* The Sirens of TI - at Treasure Island.
* The Lion Habait at the MGM Grand
* The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign

LA's not the best for snorkeling and scuba diving. Compared to, say, Hawaii or the Florida Keys, the water is cold, rough, and murky. But if you do a day trip to Catalina on a dive boat there's worthwhile stuff to see. That said, I'm guessing from your "try once" comment that you may not be scuba certified. Unless you want to invest several days in an intensive certification course, I'd suggest settling for snorkeling (Catalina is still a good choice for that).

What's Miami like for Scuba diving?

I would hit LA first and make the drive to Vegas in a a vintage convertible, must be red. Be sure to bring plenty of pot, cocaine and acid for the trip.

I would agree that Las Vegas is not worth spending a week in. 3 or 4 nights in Las Vegas, a week in Southern California, and maybe a few days in Northern California if you want to see Redwood and Yosemite.

Meh. Kinda sorta, but not really. I mean, it's an amazingly fun place for all of three days or so -- but that includes gambling and fine dining. If you're just doing the shows and sight seeing, sans gambling, I honestly don't know how you're going to tolerate much longer than a handful of days in the city. You could go shopping, I guess, and walk around the casinos and hotels. But that will get old fairly quickly. Seven days is absolutely too long; that's for sure.

Well I am open to suggestions. Originally the plan was to do a trip to LA, Vegas, Miami and then New York but I need to speak to travel agent about how expensive that'll be.
