I'm trying to sell an old car on Kijiji. I posted it with the standard details.

I receive this in response:

"Hi, just want to know if your item is still available...kindly respond with details..."

I go back with:

"Yes it is. What sort of detail are you looking for."

And this morning I receive:

"Thanks for your prompt reply.I really appreciate your detailed breakdown and frankness on this.Unfortunately, Im on my way to India on an official trip(I'm a marketing Executive) and wont be back for another two weeks, I would have come to inspect the item personally... Im taking your word for true on It though .

Im okay with the price, I think it worth it anyway. If you'd like to know, Im relocating to the UK soon and I'm trying to gather some good stuff for my new abode. Im buying yours amongst others, quickly! before someone else grabs it.So, I'll arrange to send you payment ASAP. However, I'll have to notify my shipper who's helping me move my stuff from the US,to get set for the pickup of the item from your place as I MIGHT be delayed in India depending on how things goes.
Thanks.

PS: In the mean time, kindly get back to me with your information including your name to write on the check, contact address and your phone# so I can get certified check prepared and have it sent out to you ASAP...."

Obviously some sort of weird scam. I'm selling a car, not furniture for an "abode." It would be ridiculous to ship a car that's only worth a couple grand. I am going to tell him to send cash to my work address, saying I don't accept cheques of any type.

Anyone else run into this sort of scam?

Alright, one Google search confirms that the deal is they are either creating a spam mailing list (less likely) or will send a fake certified cheque which you only realize after you've sent the item (more likely). Of course this won't work well with a car, so I guess they just suck at due diligence, i.e. reading.

This is probably the most common Craigslist/Kijiji/etc scam. I can't believe people still fall for it, but they do. On a related note, this site is funny: http://www.419eater.com/

Yeah, not sure why I had to ask in retrospect. I have seen the 419-eater things and they are awesome.
