Taking in a stray cat

There's a cat that hangs around my building with no collar, very friendly, and relatively clean/soft/healthy, looks like a Maine Coon but pretty thin, tail is broken and healed into a Z-shape. I made friends and brought it out to my deck and gave it some food I had from another random cat that used to hang around, and now it wants to hang out. It's in my living room right now. When I first gave it food it wolfed all of it down quickly so I assume it's not living somewhere where it's getting fed regularly. It scratched on the sliding door the other night and hung out for a couple of hours, but though I felt bad about it, I tossed it out at about 4 AM since I didn't know if it would behave in my place while I was asleep.

I would like to keep him (her? can't tell). I've been considering getting a cat for quite a while and this one obviously needs a home. Someone told me I should either take it in to the vet and have it fixed/shots etc and then have it be indoor only (doesn't seem very likely possible since it's lived outside all this time) or leave it alone and not feed it. I wouldn't mind having it be "mine" and an indoor/outdoor cat, and I'll obviously need to take it in to have it fixed and checked out, but I don't know if there is anything else I should know. Any advice?

I keep calling him Roger but he might be a girl.

The last two cats we've owned have been picked up off the street (actually jumped into our truck bed at a gas station) and at our lake house, respectively.
We just took them in and made sure they were healthy, asked around the neighborhood to make sure it wasn't someone's lost cat, although it was already pretty obvious, and then considered them ours.
They made awesome pets and were more than eager to have homes. One looks almost exactly like the one you posted. Good luck man.

Actually found one a couple weeks ago. It is rather young I'm pretty sure. It is so fuckin adorable it is sickening. Will post a pic soon.

Cute cat. I'd trap it in a box and take it to the vet to have him/her checked.

Make sure its fixed and get any necessary shots. There'll be a little bit of an upfront cost, but definitely worth it.

You could also have the cat scanned to see if there is any type of chip implant. Unlikely, but it is possible the cat actually does have an owner and got lost.

This.

Then take care of it as your own.

Sounds like the cat found you. Good looking cat (except for the tail). You like, you keep, would be my advice.

oh my god if you don't keep it an angel will die a horrible death.

I like the tail. I also have a severely messed up spine, so I feel like we will have stuff to talk about.

Well, allowing him to come/sleep inside, more than expecting to "own" a cat. I know better than that.

One big plus is that he looks photogenic, so we can have a whole new SF-meme generator.

Cute little fucker. Take it to the vet and then enjoy your new destroyer of property.

I've taken in two strays over the years. Both turned up and demanded to be fed and let in. Vet checked them over and I couldn't locate an owner. One settled for the rest of their life, the other one settled for a couple of years then kept turning up at a local pub a couple of miles across the fields. In the end the pub offered to let him stay and as that was where he wanted to be it would have been cruel to try and hang on to him. He hung around the pub for a couple of years before deciding he prefered living out at the local boatyard.

With strays they'll sometimes settle, sometimes get restless. If you're happy with that give it a place to stay for as long as it wants one.
