Do you like/dilsike your industry/business or other industries?

I was talking to a couple guys about it the other day. There are always hot industries and stagnant industries and all that. Do you ever think that your industry sucks or really really wanna get into something else because you think it's more interesting? Do you think it's a "greener grass" thing? The original talk was about real estate investment/finance (commercial, institutional level) and insurance (once again, corporate/business/reinsurance/risk) and how although those might seem boring and slow to some, others fine them interesting, timeless and prosperous. We were kinda split. Discuss. i guess this can also be about tax law (boring?) fashion biz (hot?) teaching (rewarding? lots of vacations?) and so on.

Grass is always greener. If it's "work," it sucks. Only a few lucky people get paid to do things that rock, like Ron Jeremy.

Shit. Okay. Everything you do for money sucks. It's why they call it "work."

That has been my philosophy for about my entire working life. But I'm known for being a cynical bastard

Kyle is lucky, he seems to be enthralled with his new career. Me? I get up, deal with the same shit, do the same shit, get paid every two weeks, and find my joy after hours.

I'm forming a business plan for a cocktail bar, similar to www.velvettangoroom.com I'm afraid to move it out of the fantasy phase, as I don't want to come to view any bar as "work."

I'm in the oil industry. I'd rather be working for a Siemens and building wind turbines or the like, or putting my degree to work at a company like SOM doing structural engineering, but I'm addicted to the time off. I've worked 7.5 out of the last 17 months.

Measurements and Logging While Drilling. Basically programming electronics, acquiring and processing data, and a bit of hands on stuff.

When you work, you work though. I've had 4 days off in the last 2.5 months, and 2 of those were spent flying for work.

I work in porn but I would rather be a management consultant. Sigh...maybe one day.

I don't dislike my industry, or any I have worked in. what I can live without is going back to a start up/small company. having spent a lot of my career working for small companies, I would hate to go back - the money pressure, the pressure to work with borderline morality, the cheap travel budgets.

Are you working for one of the "big three"? I have a pretty boring office job in the Natural Gas industry. I'm thinking of switching to wireline or drilling. It seems pretty interesting and at least you get to travel and work outdoors.
