Parker 51 Fountain Pen

I just won a fountain pen on ebay, the Parker 51. It's a beaut. However, now I need to know some basic things like what type of ink to use (or avoid) and perhaps some helpful fountain pen tips. If anyone here knows and could help out I would appreciate it.

I've been dying to get one of those but I'm always worried that it'll come with some sort of flaw. You mind me asking how much you snagged it for?

I think I got a decent deal, $54.03 including priority shipping. 18 bids in all, only 1 was mine (sniped, of course)

Good deal. Does it have the vacumatic ink thingy?

the aerometric filling system? yes, and it claims to be working properly

Nice. It's a real beaut. What size nib does it have? That's my problem with most of the auctions. The sellers pick them up at estate sales and have no idea what the details of the pen are.

Here is the listing: This pen is one of several that I'll be listing for a friend. The pen is in excellent condition; it measures 5.5 inches in the closed position. There are no heavy or deep scratches, cracks, chips, splits or teeth marks on the pen body or cap; the cap has no dents or dings. The aerometric filling system is working properly and the pen fills as designed. The nib is a fine point; it’s been adjusted for smooth writing and proper ink flow. The imprint fair. Given your line of questions I think you know more about this pen than I do, but that isn't really saying much!

I've seen that guy list several times before. I'd always been turned off by the "listing for a friend of mine" thing.

The 51 is a great workhorse FP. If the filling system works then it's low maintenance, fill it up with any FP ink and it'll be fine.

The "listing for a friend" is a little odd, but with 1500+ feedback and 100% positive I figured the seller was fine.

can you PM me his name please. I'll keep him on my radar to see if he turns up any more.

looking at those pics, I feel like a dick for picking up a 10-pack of cheap hero knockoffs. but for what it's worth, they're not all that bad, and I really don't care too much about a missing $1.50 fountain pen. I think it's about time to invest in a 51 for home use... EDIT: Noodler's ink is fantastic if you can get a hold of it. Prices are a bit steep ($20 for a fair sized bottle?) but they're worth every penny. Best ink I've ever used, makes even garbage pens write like a dream. check sites like pendemonium for clearance sales.

great, thanks a lot ntaqip

I disliked Noodlers when I more into FPs several years ago because they really tend to bleed. If they've fixed this then they have some interesting colours. I use Aurora black, MB burgundy and brown.

I'm not much a fan of Noodler's although I will say I don't have too much exposure to them. I recently tried one of their specialty inks called Esenin Blood Red (part of their Russian Artist collection) and found that it dried super quick and clogged my pens.

My suggestion is J. Herbin. Every ink of theirs works spectacularly on my two Viscontis (Aida and Van Gogh) and they have a range of cool colors. www.fountainpennetwork.com is a resource you should also look into.
