Cotton suits: Tyrwhitt vs. Brooks/Press/etc.

CT cotton suits are pretty darn expensive at full retail of $720.

By contrast:

Brooks Brothers cotton offerings are $328
J. Press are $395
J.A.Banks are $295 (on semi-perma-sale for $220)
Banana Republic are $375
J.Crew are $366

SO...

While I realize the CT suits can be gotten for 50% off in some cases, whats with the retail price that is about double everybody else's retail price?

Is there something extra-special about the CT suits that justifies the significantly higher price? Or is this pure price inflation? (The 50% business while not uncommon, doesn't seem to be a ubiquitous as, say, TM Lewin sales...)

I don't know about the quality of the CT cotton suits, but I did get one of the wool ones around the time they first became available, and thus on promotion.

FWIW, I find the overall quality OK, if uninspired. I do like the English-style details such as the side vents and slimmer fit. But the wool is a bit coarse. I use it mainly as a travel suit. There is no way I would pay full price for a CT suit, and definitely not for a CT cotton suit.

I think the CT sale is run nearly constantly. It's often a bit of a secret, but they also consistently run 25-40% off sales without the link. The current link is www.ctshirts.com/spots.

Are the Brooks suits 100% cotton?

I want a cotton suit, but am not happy with any of the RTW choices, so am going to have one made in India by Vaish. Still awaiting the price quote, but it will be somewhere between $200 and $400, depending on material. Will probably get an extra trouser.

A lot of those cotton suits are actually cotton/evilsynthetic.

No - the books look like they're part "coolmax" polyester.

The J.Press is 100% cotton

I have a J. Press in the all-cotton as well -- it is actually rather uncomfortably hot. The cotton is thick.

I agree. This fact kept me from buying one during their summer sale last year.
