The Boy Who Heard Too Much

He was a 14-year-old blind kid, angry and alone. Then he discovered that he possessed a strange and fearsome superpower "” one that put him in the cross hairs of the FBI

It began, as it always did, with a phone call to 911. "Now listen here," the caller demanded, his voice frantic. "I've got two people here held hostage, all right? Now, you know what happens to people that are held hostage? It's not like on the movies or nothing, you understand that?"

"OK," the 911 operator said.

"One of them here's name is Danielle, and her father," the caller continued. "And the reason why I'm doing this is because her father raped my sister."

The caller, who identified himself as John Defanno, said that he had the 18-year-old Danielle and her dad tied up in their home in Security, a suburb of Colorado Springs. He'd beaten the father with his gun. "He's bleeding profusely," Defanno warned. "I am armed, I do have a pistol. If any cops come in this house with any guns, I will fucking shoot them. I better get some help here, because I'm going fucking psycho right now."

The 911 operator tried to keep him on the line, but Defanno cut the call short. "I'm not talking anymore," he snapped. "You have the address. If I don't have help here now, in the next five minutes, I swear to fucking God, I will shoot these people." Then the line went dead.

Officers raced to the house, ready for an armed standoff with a homicidal suspect. But when they arrived, they found no gunman, no hostages, no blood. Danielle and her father were safe and sound at home "” alone. They had never heard of John Defanno, for good reason: He didn't exist.

Fascinating piece.

Interesting. It's a shame no one told him about name hunting. Head hunters will outsource some of their work to people who do nothing but try to get names of key staff members over the phone. They are often paid per name, a couple bucks per. They can make very good money. His ability to impersonate and his confidence would have made him an instant pro. All he would have had to do is collect names, titles, contact details, etc. and write them down (or hell, just record the conversation).

Funny that you mentioned that because I did project work for a headhunting enterprise after school for a couple of years and had the same idea after reading it. It was a pain in the ass to get numbers&names of some really specialized&well shielded people and executives, my work would have been a lot easier if I knew a guy like him. But to be honest, who wants to be friends with such a *hrrg* complicated person.

It would be awesome if the SWAT team caught him and gave him a swift kick in the teeth. "This is how we get our phreak on!"

11 years seems harsh, child molesters get less time.

Great article, thanks for the link.

It was an ok read, but I did not sympathize with the guy at all.

It was a good read, I think it was posted on gizmodo earlier today but I'll say what I said there which is that this sentence should be a huge time out from phones for this kid. And the fact that they're giving him phone access seems like they're cutting him some slack.

Wish I had heard of this a long time ago, though I guess I could still do it in my off time. As a kid I did a lot of "social engineering" over the phone, but never for malicious purposes.

At an agency where Mrs. T used to work, that was de rigeur for all headhunters. They got in, found someone willing to chat for a moment, and then played themselves off as being from [software firm] and - "we're reaching out to the folks who use our products, but I want to personalize this as much as possible - can you give me some of the names of your developers?"

One time she found herself in a voicemail system that she was familiar with and started punching extensions and harvesting names. After around 30 minutes she had a sketchy org chart of the company with names, some titles, and extensions.

Yep, a rather lame but quite common approach. There are many more and they get dirtier every year, there are handbooks for identer and from time to time they add some photocopied sites with new tactics&openers -> Gets nastier from the first page to the last one.
