i choose "they're stupid"

I would have chosen only the first two, I think the "Genetics" claim is BS for 99.999% of fatties.

Randy Newman should write a song. "Fat people got no reason to..." But he's fat, too, isn't he.

combination. obesity is highly heritable and there are certain genes that can predict obesity (that control metabolism and appetite, http://atvb.ahajournals.org/cgi/cont...ract/26/5/968), but I'm sure much can also be said about the environment kids grow up in.

some fat dude who acted like a total prick was in the deli this morning. 2 eggs, bacon and cheese on a roll. vitamin water. side of home fries. 130g of carbs and 40g fat to start your day. ftw. don;t think it's genetics.

well yeah, but it's possible that he reacts worse to high amounts of calories than most other people which reinforces itself in a negative feedback loop (eat a lot of food -> get fat -> since i'm fat i might as well just keep eating a lot of food or try a diet -> too hard (biochemical/genetic imbalance) -> just stay fat)

obesity for a lot of people is a genetic disease although a definitely curable one

There is often a genetic component to obesity -- be it a genetic predisposition to storing calories as fat more readily than others, or a genetically oversized appetite. That said, I hate when people use genetics as an excuse for being overweight -- as if "genetics" absolves them of all responsibility for their fate. Genetics may have dealt you a bad hand, but you still have to play that hand. Some people have to work harder than others to stay in shape. It's not fair, but it can be done. You know what'll be interesting to watch? When mapping individuals' genes becomes cheap, comprehensive, and easily attainable, we're going to be able to tell people exactly which genes are giving them weight problems. And my prediction is that people will get even fatter as a result. The "it's genetics, so it's out of my control" mindset will be even more firmly entrenched when people have facts and data to prove their point. Learned helplessness is one of the most powerful forces in human psychology.

i feel by that point, i feel like we would have developed some sort of transcriptional or translational gene control like rnai to target said genes edit: actually, they may not be post transcriptional gene silencing, but there is ephederine and caffeine stack. i think their beneficial effects on obese people have been pretty well documented

It's not going to be that easy to do. Genetic contributions to obesity are highly intertwined with environment, including development. The amount of people that you can actually say "it's genetic" and be entirely accurate about are a very small percentage of the population. Hopefully by the time we can map an individuals genes cheaply and actually know what it means we've moved beyond the "it's genetic" versus "it's environmental" mindset.

I'd include lack of exercise in that list as well. Generally its just eating too much without doing anything to burn the extra calories, or laziness :P

Most people IME are incredibly fucking lazy and or stupid.

I was at the grocery store a few weeks ago and this really fat lady in front of me at the register had like 6 2L bottles of soda, chips, and those frozen chicken mcnuggets. That was it. She was wearing shorts and you could see the fat from her upper-leg overhanging her knees. It was so gross. I certainly think some people naturally have to do more work to keep weight off, but most just don't do the work and they have horrible eating habits. There was a woman at my office that was like this. When she finally decided to do something about it she lost like 100lbs. She's still fat, but a lot less fat, and with work she could probably become a reasonable size.

from a socioeconomic and psychological standpoint, I have to believe there is some connection between fatness and a) it being a concrete example of being able to provide food for a family, b) the appearance that even though someone may be quite poor, if he/she/her/his children are fat, they are being provided sustenance. plain and simple, bad food is cheap and easily accessible, easy to prepare.
