Casino poker

Any of you ever play it? I want to give it a try, but what to expect? What's typically the lowest buy in table? What is the atmosphere like? How 'pro' are the players? It's probably worth just going and checking out but I want to get some feedback first.

It's slower than online play, and in my experience, tighter than most home games. I don't have the patience for it.

yes and I thought it was ok. I also found the slowness irritating. its like a home game but you cant yell at people

The lowest no limit games are usually 1/2 blinds with a buyin range of ~$100 to ~$200. For limit games the lowest you'll see is 2/4,3/6,4/8 something like that which you can often buyin for less than $100 comfortably. At the lowest levels you won't see any 'pros', at least not in live games.

Depends on the place. I used to play in AC a lot, and there were a lot of "pros" (basically grinders) playing the 2/5 NL game. It was my favorite stake to play, I sometimes played 6/12 limit and 10/20 nl as well. The 2/5 game is really "soft" in that people are there to gamble. Even though the max buy in is 500, it is not unusual for there to be 4-5 people there with 2-3k and for everyone to have about 1k in front of them.

The higher limits and the 1/2NL game is much tighter in my opinion and therefore a lot slower. The grinders that play the 2/5 game I suspect have a pretty big bankroll which is why they're so willing to gamble at those stakes. I usually bring 4-5 buy ins for that table.

In northern CA, there is no NL games, so there's a spread limit. Basically at the place I play, you have 5-200 (button: 2, SB: 3, BB: 5; min bet 5, max 200) and 10-200 (400? It's been a while) spread. These games are off the charts soft, but there are some really good players, especially at the 3/6 kill omaha hi-lo game. I bring about 200-1k to these games, though generally, I never really need more than one buy in.

Generally poker to me is pretty boring, especially the home games. I really only have the itch to play three to four times a year. I did crush this one one guy for a 3k pot holding quads Ks vs his quad 2s (I flopped the nuts) two years ago.

To give you an idea of the skill level present in live poker, move the decimal 1 place to the left and there is your equivalent skill in the online world. e.g. someone doing okay at $.10-$.20 online should be okay at $1-$2 live. Maybe not quite that dramatic, but live games are so soft in my experience. Under $10-$20 NL you won't find anyone 3-betting light, putting a squeeze on, or doing anything remotely tricky.

Unbearably slow imo. You have to compensate by upping the stakes, but that's a bad idea unless you have the skills and the BR to do it properly.
