Does every guy over 35 have a gut?

It's depressing to walk around and see practically every middle aged man sporting a belly. Are exercise & good eating habits nonexistent for 90% of the population?

Don't fret, Conne. If you work really hard and make lots of money, you can get a guy with washboard abs.

Well, your metabolism slows down; so you have to do more work to keep slim.

I dont know about 35 but after 45 its very hard not to have a gut unless you are a struggling peasant from Bangladesh or something.

Its all relative though. What would be considered a disgraceful gut on a 25 year old gets me compliments on how slim and trim I am at 49.

If you don't want a gut at 35, don't have one by 30. In other words, get into the habit of working out regularly and hard now, because it's much easier now. Prevention is much, much easier than correction.

Also: diet is kind of playing second fiddle to exercise in today's workout-obsessed culture, but it still matters a great deal. Most kids in their 20s have absolutely terrible eating habits. Break those habits before your 30s or you'll be paying dearly for them. Most of the guts out there on 30-something men come from the classic "I used to be able to eat whatever I wanted, then the bottom dropped out from my metabolism at 30" syndrome. Don't be that guy. Know that your metabolism will slow in your thirties, and don't plan to eat at 30 the way you ate at 20.

I'm over 50. I don't have a gut. I have guts, but that's a different story. I'm very close to the "ideal" weight for my height.

But I've never been overweight. I've always gotten plenty of exercise, and except for a while in college, have always watched what I eat. These days, unlike most men my age, I still work out frequently and still watch my diet.

So there are exceptions, but yeah, a lot of us, unfortunately, are chubby. Then again, I see a lot of men under 35 who are grossly overweight.

conne, you should have been at my high school reunion. we are all 33 or 34 and most looked awful. married + 30 or over + demanding job generally = gut. not all guys with 3 kids are willing to eat dry chicken and alienate their friends and family for 6-8 hrs week of gym time.

on a side note, my goal was always to lose my flanks/love handles, which i had since childhood. now i have lost them but overworked obliques to the point they look like love handles from the front anyways. what the fuck.

This. In addition, no man who has lower body fat than his wife is happily married. Try it and see how quickly you get called anorexic.

But don't worry, Conne. It'll never happen to you.

men should have lower body fat than women though in general

No worries just get a couple billion. Flat abs are for peasants

I second Arrogant Bastard. To quote Mark Twain, it's easier to stay out than get out. Of course, life sometimes gets in the way. Anyone who obsesses over things we obsess over at SF must be a little narcissistic. That it carries over to how we care for our bodies should come as no surprise. If you're using yourself as the standard, you are bound to be disappointed.
