honestly, this sort of "anyone who wants to can do it" home hobbyist attitude is the reason I stopped painting altogether.

Now, now, I don't see anyone going the "modern art, psh! Even my three-year old could do that" route. Painting for pleasure doesn't mean your work merits a gallery or even that other people give a shit.

Discouraging people from doing something creative, even if they're unschooled, unskilled or untalented is a losing proposition.

I'm sure it is but if I can discourage just one watercolor sailboat "artist" then I feel I may have accomplished something.

i understand your intent. but as someone who paints both for pleasure and for money, i don't see anything wrong with someone expressing themselves, even if they don't have any real talent for it.

I think it is encouraging that anyone wants to step away from the computer and do something creative in actuality rather than a virtual one. All talent starts at a beginning. The evolution that brought us to where we are may not be a permanent state. It may be reliant on someone, anyone, actually acting out their inclination to do something not usual for them.
