This seems to be the predominant view of tequila in the US and Canada. It's not something to be appreciated, it's something to do shots with. I was of this school for many years too. So where do you stand, and why?

middle one. Mostly because i've tried marvelous tequilas and know what they're capable of. I assume that most people's association with tequila has come with hard shots of Cuervo that led to a nasty night and morning after and thus they're unwilling to drop $60 on a bottle of something else. It's unfortunate, but cheap tequila can really knock you out far worse than cheap vodka or rum, etc.

I was once an hour late meeting my girlfriend (now wife) at a bar. When I arrived it was clear that she was completely tanked so I asked the bartender what was up. He said it was a "buck a shot" for tequila and my sweetie had downed "I dunno, maybe 5 or 10 of 'em". I told him to pour me 10 shots as I figured I had better catch up and I downed them in a row, without the salt or lemon. And that's about the last that I remember until I puked in the bus on my way to work the next morning. haven't had any since that day around 15 years ago. This thread makes me want to try a more premium version.

QFT. Even the good stuff hits like a freight train.

I've had bad experiences with tequila. Haven't touched the stuff in years.

Like I said in the other thread, there are some fine tequilas out there that can be enjoyed as a fine spirit. I've actually done a high end tequila tasting before, and there was some amazing stuff there.

While I've sipped some decent tequila (visited a few good distilleries in BC, Mexico), it is the one liquor that tastes like shoe polish to me served straight. Whether it's the "good stuff" or stuff off the rail it is just a sliding scale of unpleasantness with a good silver on the side towards "pleasant" when shot. I do like margaritas and while I generally consider it a sin using any above-average liquor in a mixed drink I do splurge for the upgrade because there is nothing worse than coming off bad tequila.

I can drink a half a bottle of scotch along with a six pack of beers and feel okay, or one single shot of tequila, which would inevitably hit 5, 10, 30 minutes down the road and I get to taste dinner again. I don't touch this stuff with a ten foot pole.

That sounds almost like an allergy.

There's no doubt though, something in tequila makes it punch above its weight.

Not only is its sole purpose shots... its sole purpose is tough guy shots. Those guys are pussies though. Look at them ladies makin' pained faces afterwards. Be a man.

Not sure what it is, either, but it's like swallowing a boxer and the guy tries to punch his way out afterward.

I downed a bottle of El Toro in an afternoon by the pool and kept the hat as a trophy.

The effects were very enjoyable.

Cheap tequila shots mess me up something fierce.

The good stuff is really good and wasted when drunk as a shot.

I finally had my share of Patrón silver yesterday. Pretty smooth served straight. It didn't burn like other cheap tequila I had in the past.
