Hi, guys, I'm going to Cairo in a few days, and was wondering if any of you knew if it's a good place to buy cotton fabric that I could take back to my tailor to have some shirts made. I'm also looking for seersucker for a suit, haven't found it so far in Asia, where I live. Egypt is of course famous for its cotton, but I don't know if it's a good place to buy fabric or if they even mill any cotton there. Thanks for any advice.

I didn't see any cotton fabric for sale either, except for use as drapes, and a few bales of raw cotton. There are a lot of fabric dealers on Gawhar al-Qaid or al-Muski street, about a block or two west of al-Muizz street, who sell what appears to be low-quality wool for suits. It might be artificial fabric. I didn't spend much time looking. There is also a factory on al-Muizz street that makes fezzes or tarboushes, apparently the last factory of its kind in Egypt. Not that I wear a fez. There are a lot of tailors around Ataba metro station, and their display stuff doesn't look half-bad, but I have no idea of what material they're made of. There are many businessmen in Cairo who wear nice-looking suits, but they all had 3-button jackets, which I find to be a little old-fashioned and perhaps unnecessarily hot in Cairo's climate. Cairo is a great city to visit, and I would recommend anybody who has the chance to visit to do so. As is said in the 1001 Nights, "he who has not seen Cairo has not seen the world."

my guy in Cairo gets his suits from syria. go figure.

I had my suits taken in by a guy who does the suits of one of mubaraks' right hand men, for like 10 bucks a suit (to take them in). works in a little pidgion hole, but did reasonable work.
