frizzy hair

Thread Starter
My hair is really frizzy, especially when there's no product in it. I'll attach a photo. Anyway, I'm currently using some tres emme shampoo and conditioner that is supposedly "moisturizing for curly hair" that I got at jewel-osco. As you can see, it doesn't work very well. I have some privé pomade which sometimes works, but usually just makes my hair look clumpy. Any suggestions for different shampoo/conditioner/product?

How often are you washing your hair? If you have thick hair and you're washing more than 3 times a week, you're probably frying it - especially with tresemme crap. Most shampoo/conditioner brands at stores like costco/supermarkets are filled with useless, moisture sucking additives and detergents. Brands like suave are typically the best unless you're going to buy full-retail salon products - you can also have some luck with organic brands, but those are hit or miss. I would suggest cutting down on the amount of washing you do - rinse, but don't shampoo or condition, and apply product as usual. If your hair gets startlingly greasy, you might be one of those people who has to shell out dough for decent hair products. Once again, I'll recommend Bumble&Bumble's line of shampoos/etc - they, and several others also do "protein treatments" designed to restore some protein/moisture imbalance or something. Also, as far as products - if the pomade you're using is clumping up your hair, you can try some really dry wax - there are a lot of brands that make lighter-weight pomades and waxes. iirc, American Crew has like 20 styling wax, and I think you can find that pretty much anywhere. Also, try styling when wet with waxes +pomades; it can help keep some of the frizziness in check.

Consider using shampoo and conditioner less frequently and using something like Crew styling cream or forming cream.

A good shampoo and moisture conditioner will help. I would try a good quality brand (Bumble and Bumble, Aveda, Abba, etc...) that you won't find at the grocery store. It will be a little more expensive but will last longer and will leave your hair in better shape. Poor quality shampoos have a high pH which opens the hair cuticles when washing and leaves them open letting the natural moisture escape. Also, cheaper shampoos typically use more detergent which washes away your natural oils and curly hair tends to be more dry anyway... You can try washing less frequently as well (but you still need to use quality products). Waxes and pomades are fine and you can also use a soft hold gel (like Aveda's Confixor) which, while going completely unnoticed, will accentuate and separate your curls and keep your hair from getting frizzy. Also, there are many "curl enhancers" (especially by Aveda) which will help eliminate frizz and control your curl.

I have hair that looks similar.

However, not washing is not an option. Once I sleep on my head, it sticks up everywhere and nothing short of water and shampoo will make it look normal again.
