going to vegas, can i use a passport as id?

so i finally had to become a california resident (am from hawaii)

went to the dmv today to get my driver's license, and was surprised that i wasn't issued a california license on the spot. they told me to expect it in the mail in 2-3 weeks.

then, they punched a hole in my hawaii driver's license. they gave me a paper "interim" california license, but this has no picture on it.

the problem is that i'm going to vegas for labor day with my girlfriend and am now without an id that says my name, birth date and has my picture that is not my passport.

so, in short--can i use my passport to buy drinks/get into clubs/whatever in vegas? i googled it, and the answers were less than conclusive. it seems like some people are idiots about a passport being a national form of id, so i was wondering what the enlightened lads on styleforum had to say.

pretty sure a gov't issued ID has to be accepted everywhere by law. i'm in the same boat with a lost ID and have been using my passport everywhere - bars, liquor store, etc.

yes, passport is fine, but bring your paper id with you too, in case you run into a retard..

technically yes, but also a private establishment can reject you for almost any reason.

did you get your hawaii ID back? Even with the hole? I would bring the passport, the paper ID and the hawaii ID. But seriously, no club/bar, etc... has to let you in regardless of what your ID is and who issued it. Just because its valid doesnt mean they will let you in and you might run into a bouncer/security who doesnt want to accept the passport just to be a dick. Just be a nice guy about it, smile the whole time, and I am sure you wont have any real problems.

i got the hawaii id back, it's still in my wallet. just don't really know how much a bouncer will want to hear the entire convoluted story. but i'm generally a cheery person and smile and talk with workers at stores, restaurants, bars, etc, so i'll just do that.

i already tried to buy some alcohol and took out the paper license...the lady just looked at me, flabbergasted. i took out my passport and she said "yeah, we take that"

if i would have known i wouldn't have gotten the license on the same day, i would have just waited. in hawaii, i got it five minutes after taking my picture.

Bars want a form of ID that a) has your photo, b) has your name, c) has your DOB, and d) is currently valid per ABC regulations. As long as they have that from you they'll gladly take your money ESPECIALLY in a town like Vegas that's loaded with tourists. Yes, bars have the ultimate right to refuse service if they suspect forgery but c'mon, it's a passport. It's Vegas.

When I've been in Vegas my Passport has never been denied. I'm Australian, most foreigners will use their Passports as ID when traveling. So, if they accept mine they should accept yours.
