Swimmers hair (any swimmers in the house?)

I used to run, developed some ankle issues, now I swim. Usually 3-4 times a week. Anyway, it's killing my hair. I guess it's medium length, a bit shaggy on the ends but not what I would call long. At first I kind of liked the effect, made it look a little disheveled, or like it had just been dyed. But after a couple weeks it's just too much- it's looks like it's been fried. The main product I use is Redken Maneuver, which is a mix between a pomade and a wax. I put it in after I towel dry (while the hair is still a bit damp). The shampoo and conditioner I use is Dove, the one with the extra moisturizing BS, but I actually don't wash my hair that often.

So any advice from those of you that swim? I've heard that shampooing before you hit the pool can help but I haven't tried it yet. Don't really know what else to do.

You could always wear a cap.

its kinda the price you pay... used to swim in high school and you're kinda screwed no matter what...although be sure to wash your hair throughly when you get outta the pool

A cap is the best option.

Second is to wash right after with one of the countless products out there to neutralize chlorine.

One such example: http://www.swimoutlet.com/Swim_Shamp...FRINDQodZGeO7w

just google "swimmers shampoo".

If you're in the pool every day, it will eventually make your hair really brittle and a sickly color.

Agreed with the cap. I used to swim competetively for years and no matter what level you're at, caps were the answer. No magic shampoo agent. They can help, but it won't cure it. You'll probably feel self-concious at first, but you get used to it. Although it might feel weirder a bit longer if you're just swimming recreationally so that not everyone else is wearing a cap as well...

I m a swimmer in high school. my hair used to be black, more like dark dark brown. But ever since i started swimming and surfing, my hair is now LIGHT Brown. It gets dried a lot and is easily tangle and it curls sometimes too! well i like the effect, makes me look like a total beach bum bra. Well if you want to fix it there are some ways. Use conditioner A LOT! Wear a cap. Quit swimming. Or cut your hair real short and it'll grow back normal.

A guy a know goes swimming every morning and he has blonde hair, but it looks really greasy and way too shiny. Advice is to get a buzzcut then start taking care of your hair.

to swim team guys, why are competitive pools, clubs, etc not converted to salt as are most home pools?

thanks and sorry to side track

It's either have a little messy hair, or get messed up ankles/not as good of a workout. Your choice.

Because we pee in the pools (nationals swimmer). Seriously.

You're better off not buying the expensive products because they will do nothing more than regular conditioner to protect your hair from chlorine, in fact, I have only found that two products get the smell out; Lush Shampoo Bars and Costco pump shampoo.

Your only option to keep your hair looking normal is to get on your stylists calendar twice a month and have them trim the ends.

Hmmmm... so do any of you actually use one of these shampoos? Just use the shampoo and not conditioner?

I'm considering the cap, probably the best idea, but I really don't want to take it that far. I'm worried it will make me look much more serious than I am. Whatev- I swim so I look good outside the pool, so how I look inside shouldn't matter, right?

Don't be so self conscious while swimming.

When working out I wear all my crappy old t-shirts and shorts. I'm there to get a workout, not look pretty.

Just wear the cap.
