alcohol-based aftershave: a definitive answer?

is there a definitive answer to whether alcohol-based aftershave damages your skin over long-term use? a lot of people say it does, but is it worse than using no aftershave at all?

this is assuming you double-edge or straight-razor it, and you nick yourself very rarely. i mean, obviously i understand the need for alcohol-based aftershave to disinfect cuts, but is there anything else it does?

also, does alcohol-based aftershave accelerate the fabled "hamburger face" condition

Unless you have very oily skin, alcohol based aftershave can dry your skin out and may cause further irritation.

What is the point of aftershave in general? I have never used it and my skin is fine.

^ antiseptic, yeah? i alternate between clubman aftershave and witch hazel but i don't shave frequently enough for the op's concern to be an issue

it is used to sooth any irritation that may have resulted from the shave...is the obvious answer

Antiseptic for what? I never get infections on my face.

kinda counterintuitive that something that burns like hell is used to soothe

Ah I guess I am lucky then. I mean I do get acne sometimes but very rarely in the areas of my face that I shave (neck/chin/cheeks).

I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older.

It should clear up the acne on your rump nicely.

using a straight razor and nicking yourself very rarely - aHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

My go-to aftershave has witch hazel and alcohol and my skin has not suffered a bit over the past few years. If your skin gets dry, use something different. There are plenty of options.
