Ok, good points to know, but I've never actually had a problem buying a ticket. Yes, lines can be a bit long at some London stations, but it's like knowing that security lines are long at some airports. You get there a few minutes early. And anyways, you can always get a machine within a few minutes.

Agree with all that you say. I've never had a problem either; never been given a penalty fare. But might be useful to know, for the day you misplace your ticket.
