People who brag about having "totally awesome cooking skills" but they don't

one of my co-workers back before i moved said he had totally awesome cooking skills and just kept bragging about it all the time. i went over for dinner one day and his "totally awesome" cooking skills was tuna helper and rice*don't get me wrong. good and simple after an afternoon of whiskey and illicit substances*. rest of the time is hamburger helper, lipton sidekicks*maybe with imitation crab added* and maybe a simple stirfry if he isn't feeling lazy

i can understand kind of. low income*like me* still lives at home*like me* but all it takes is a little effort and deal finding. when i made a spinach salad with a red wine vinaigrette and scallops with lemon white sauce on a bed of lemon pepper linguine for my moving party it not only took half the time but i fed 10 people with it for just under 30 bucks

well there's my little story on that. anyone else have similar stories to share?

I don't associate with smalltimers who do not have totally awesome cooking skills -- like myself -- so I can't tell you one way or another.

Yeah, I love how when I tell people I cook, they go "me too", then they ask me what I know how to make. Like I've got a list of only 5 fucking recipes in my head and am going to name them all. I just respond, I dunno, what do you like to eat?
and they say "well, I know how to make ..." and say 2-3 things...

I'm the type to improvise. I look at what ingredient at what base ingredients we have in the house, then decide what to make with that base ingredient using whatever's on hand. Once in a while I actually decide in advance and buy stuff for a particular meal, but that's rare.

mainly how i work. how my family cooks so by being brought up around that almost everything is improvised

*yes* degenerated into spam. my mission is done and it appears odoreater that you are. i care because i happen to like cooking and finding people to talk about cooking with is nice

+1... I have some favorites I'll actually go buy ingredients for but generally just got to the supermarket and find one or two base things I want to use, then build a dish around that, or if I've got something at home I've got to use in mind already I buy based around that.

There are threads to talk about cooking. Or start your own if necessary. But starting a thread to dish on someone none of us know or care about is the equivalent of asking how to tell someone your jackets are made on Savile Row in the MC forum. It makes you look like you're looking for attention or respect; the former only comes by chance on SF, the latter, never.
