Obesity & diet: are people this dumb?

I have always wondered how so many people in this country are so incredibly fat. I think I discovered why. Went to the grocery store a few days ago and was walking down the soda/candy aisle. This (rather large) guy put at least ten 2-liter bottles of Mountain Dew into his shopping cart, on top of two 12-packs of Coke. The rest of his cart was packed full of frozen meals, chips, cookies and a bunch of that disgusting pre-packaged lunchmeat. Are such diets common? Are people really that oblivious to what they are eating?

There could be other stuff at play economics etc. I will say that I had a good friend who lived in a pretty bad neighborhood, he moved to a good neighborhood and the first thing he said was how nice it was to eat in a restaurant that didn't have burger or taco in the title.

I guess I am just shocked at the idea that millions of people in this country eat shit, every single day. I have been raised in an environment where home-cooked meals, produce, etc. are the norm. I am now realizing that all of this makes me sound like some clueless elitist, but I really am taken aback by the whole prospect. Simply didn't think about it before.

yeah, but I don't think a lot of that "shit eating" is by choice. Don't get me wrong there are people who can afford to be more sensible about their meals and just don't want to, but there are more people I think who just can't afford rent, day care, kids clothes, work clothes & deli meat and 2% milk and the rest.

I don't think you sound like an elitist either, sometimes just seeing stupid behavior up close brings it all home.

Suit size. Standard is around drop 6 (sometimes 7) and it refers to chest to waist difference e.g. 44 suit will have a 38 waist.

I wonder what the relationship is between obesity and shitty parenting, specifically, not teaching kids how to cook. My largest close friend also eats in restaurants or packaged meals. The closest he comes to cooking for himself is making Lipton pasta and sauce combos (cook pasta, add milk and sauce powder). I'm not sure he could make Hamburger Helper.

I would say it's not so much not teaching kids how to cook but the environment you grew up in and learned to emulate. We lived with my grandparents growing up. My grandfather had heart failure from rheumatic heart disease and, as such, our meals were prepared pretty healthily e.g. hardly any frying, low salt, etc. I picked up these habits. I think that when people grow up eating Mac n Cheese, TV dinners, McDonald's, etc. they continue with them to a large extent. At least in my case, I never learned how to cook until I went away to university. I ate in the cafeteria for the first year and then would call my mother and ask her how to cook certain things.

Wow, I don't think not teaching a kid to cook is shitty parenting. They say if you can read you can cook, I don't know. I do know that if a single mother works 8-10 hrs a day then has to come home on public transportation then has to cook, (let alone teach someone else to do it) she could be exhausted.

According to this lady, eating healthy is a major investment, one that most people can't or won't make: http://www.violentacres.com/archives...e-theyre-broke
