Seersucker at STP for $150?

STP has a nice looking Haspel seersucker suit for $150 right now (I think it was mentioned in another thread). Can anyone comment on the quality of Haspel? This seems like such a good deal that even with the alterations to shorten the skirt of the jacket I will get a good deal. They also have a Haspel in linen which is unfortunatley a 3b--not good for my body.

And what about the return policy at STP? Are they easy to deal with?

Oh, I almost forgot--I guess the basic question is, can I do better? We are headhing to NYC next weekend and will hit SYMS with some coupons to boot, but I just don't see getting anything better than this deal.

thanks all,

This is a good deal--so good I ordered one for myself earlier today. I'm not very happy about the center vent, but I guess I can live with it. If you use the SF link, you'll get it for under $150 shipped. For a suit that can easily be split for separate wear, I'm pleased.

As for the quality, I'm selling a similar sportcoat in red right now, albeit with side vents, and I was impressed with the material and the construction for the price. I think that these suits are the same, with partial lining, given STP's somewhat cryptic description. Also, my red 38 fit relatively close, which was a pleasant surprpise, and I may just end up keeping it. I think you and I are different sizes, but it may be worth looking at my measurements to get an idea. They can be seen here:

One point about length: I believe they're measuring from the top of the collar down, so you may not need to shorten at all or as much.

STP returns are perfectly easy. The credit doesn't go through all that fast, but other than that, no problems.

My local Marshalls has some Haspel jackets selling for $50. They had one I liked, but poor pattern matching kept me away.

I tried on a Haspel jacket and it had HUGE armholes.

I ordered one, too. It shipped yesterday, and is supposed to be here Tuesday, I think. For my purposes I couldn't pass it up. And STP is very good about returns, nothing to worry about there.

Edit: Ha ha--the automatic hotlink when you type STP is pretty funny, J.

Hey, what happened to the automatic STP hotlinks?

The Haspel I tried on ran small -- I'm normally a 38 and a 40R fit comfortably. Is this usually the case?

I saw that listing too. Not bad I suppose -- Seersucker, after all, was a cheap alternative for a summer suit and has its origins in frugality doesn't it? I think another company, Deansgate, might also have sold Seersucker around the time of Haspel. I have some of their stuff via Brooks. Don't know if they're around. If you check Haspel's website, you might still find that article from the WSJ reviewing seersucker suits.

If they have anything left in your size, Ben Silver might be a good place to check out too. They're about $350. Beautifully made from what I can tell. Old natural-shoulder 3 to 2. Patch pockets. Andover-esque forward pleated trouser.

Thanks for the advice guys. I ordered it through the SF link just a few minutes ago. I am a little worried about the possible tight fit, but heartened by the possibilities of larger-than-normal arm holes. I need that.

One of my favorite people, my local UPS driver, brought my STP Haspel just a little bit ago. It arrived well boxed and on a Haspel plastic suit hanger. They're pretty true to size (don't worry Bob, I don't think it will be tight), so just order what you normally wear. The fit is traditional, not sack suit. More Hickey than J Press, I'd say. The construction seems good, and the blue stripes are muted, which I like. Highly recommended, and I think a great value.

I may take it to the tailor tomorrow. I may try to snap a few pics to post later.

Excellent news, Alan. Mine was shipped yesterday so I suspect it will be here in a few days. I'm very excited. I'll give an update when I get it.

That's very good news. Mine is enroute from CO to NY right now. Hope to have it by the end of the week.
