So, I went to see a 3-D movie at the IMAX tonight...

...and during the initial previews (commercials and stuff) it said that when we got the signal we were supposed to take off the 3-D glasses. About 20 minutes into the film, the signal went off on the screen to remove the glasses. The rest of the 2 hour movie was a regular movie. WTF? Why did I just go to see a movie in 3-D only to have 2 hours of it NOT in 3-D? Did I miss something? Who made the Executive Decisions to (i) make the first 20 minutes in 3-D and not the rest of the movie (ii) charge full price for a movie that wasn't in 3-D (iii) and to show a fucking film advertising it in 3-D that wasn't totally in 3-D. I want answers.

I heard that the minority of the film is 3D. About 25 mins.

I could open my own sex therapy clinic and counsel just the men who daint realize how insecure they were until 3D. I could make a mint.

Ha...I'm glad you posted this. Took my wife & 2 sons to HP at an IMAX. 1st time at an IMAX so I was excited. On their website, there's no mention that only the 1st 20 minutes are 3D. Got in just when the actual movie began. 1st problem - glasses are used. Plastic lenses (more like thicker, plastic wrap) were warped and scratched, severely distorting the view. 2nd, the execution wasn't perfect - could still see the double lines around figures. Finally, soon after the movie began (20 minutes in), pictures at bottom of screen flashed indicating that glasses to be removed. Remainder of flick shown in 2D. Whispered to my wife whether the special? projectors were broken. She thought it was bullshit too, $15/ticket premium for the gimmick. Should've just been all 2D and not the bullshit they pulled - again, no mention on the website that it was only partially 3D. Wanted to discuss with manager thinking that there was a problem with the 3D projection but just let it go. Once home, checked online and was stunned to learn that it was only a 20 minute gimmick. Won't pay for IMAX again.

Two things. It's expensive to produce the whole thing in 3D and they're still playing with the technology and gathering feedback on it. It would be unnecessarily risky to do the whole thing in 3D.

Then they should tell you that it's not all in 3D.

I don't think they use the words that it's all in 3d either. I don't know why anyone would go to the movies with that assumption. I wonder if they have to worry about motion sickness if they extend the 3d scenes beyond a certain duration? It's really hard to do 3D well. I saw superman returns in 3D and there was about 20 minutes of 3d total. Some of the scenes were fast action where the camera jumped around a lot and it just made viewing painful.
