Well, it's not so much a remake as it is based on the same novel ("Who Goes There?") as the previous movie. Carpenter's version is more true to the original story.
I don't want to derail your thread, but I do prefer the psychological horror of "Repulsion" and "Le locataire" over the supernatural horror of Carpenter and Romero. However, looking beyond the surface horror, they all provide some more or less subtle social critique that I enjoy.
To get back to Carpenter: it's strange that so many directors struggle to transfer H.P. Lovecraft to the screen. I know that "In the Mouth of Madness" was more inspired by Lovecraft, than being a true adaption. But it was pretty mediocre nonetheless.
