Had the same thought. Surprising because probably half of this thread is some variant of "should I get a 256 or 257" (though those questions have become less frequent of late). Guess the 256 ended up being the winner much more often than not.

I have and use a 258, but it's a far different bag than a 256. In addition to being obviously deeper and adding the front pocket, it's also taller. I really only use mine when I'm doing an overnight business trip that's not overly formal and I can get away with fitting a change of clothes in the 258. Can't see it as an every day bag, but can see needing a larger bag day to day than a 256 - 257 was my first filson, and I used it exclusively for a few years.

What would you do? Use it as an excuse to buy another Filson bag in a different style? Buy another tan 257 to keep in reserve now that the model is being discontinued? Buy an entirely different bag? Just use my canvas grocery store tote in the meantime? (ahem)

I'd at least go for another color if you're staying with the 257 smile.gif. Give your self a bit of variety for when it comes back. Ordinarily I'd also recommending branching out into another size so you've got more flexibility going forward, but I guess if the 257 is the perfect bag for you and your needs, might be worth having a backup.

You came to the wrong place. We're all going to advise you to buy more. I used my 261 when my 256 was in for repair earlier this year.

I've said this before in this thread, but I would only buy New Old Stock at this point. Not hearing great things about the current offerings. I would not buy one with a 70 model number. Maybe a 110 model number, but ideally you would get one without 70 or 110. Current 257 I believe is model 70110257.

Apologies for not doing a little backreading, but did they change the construction or materials of the current models?

I agree with @Churchill W. Leather is hit or miss nowadays, and they've replaced the internal dividers with less rigid cloth (used to be the same 22 oz twill as the exterior).

No kidding, I hadn't heard that. I wouldn't even know where to begin to find Filson NOS. Any thoughts?

eBay might be your best bet. Hard to find NOS at this point since it's been a while since the changes, but you might be able to find barely used examples.

Gosh.. been pondering over this Filson purchase for years now and I think I'm finally ready to pull the plug.

Been battling between getting the 256 or 257; but with the 257 discontinued and only available at secondary outlets I think I'm going to stick with the 256.. At 5'7" and 160lbs, I'm a bit shorter too so the marginally bigger 257 actually looks quite a bit (and maybe even too) big.

My only issue now is.... TAN or OLIVE GREEN??

So many visits into the store later and I still cannot decide..... pulled the plug and got a zippered Tote for the ladyfriend's birthday in Tan but I simply can't pick for myself.... How did others choose?!

Already had the tan in the 261 so went with the otter 256. If you need for it to look more professional I would go with the darker color.

If you don't care about professionalism,. I would go with the tan, it ages better.

Yeah.. at a bit of a crossroads. I work in the healthcare industry, but my to-from doesn't really matter. Not like my patients see my bag.

Girlfriend is currently in med school... maybe I should swap the Tan 261 to Olive for her and get the Tan 256 for myself. I personally like the tan as opposed to the olive in 256.... it would be both our first Filson's - would prefer not to match, heh!

I'll be carrying around a 15" Retina MacBook and maybe a small book, +/- the charger on a regular basis. Maybe some snacks.. Is the 256 big enough for this purpose?

Re: tan vs olive. My oldest Filson is a 90s era large carrying ref 242. About the same size as the current small Pullman. The weight, thickness and quality of the bridle leather is beyond reproach. But I found myself not using it as the clamshell style doesn't lend itself to opening and closing to get something in and out on the go - like a duffle.

But last week, I needed to pack carry-on for a 4 day business trip to Wyoming. And then the utility of the clamshell came to light when packing a sports coats, dress shirts and pants. Horses for courses.

Carry-on on the outbound flight but checked it on the return so I could roam around the Denver terminal more easily as I waited for the connection. And again, I noticed how well the olive hides stains and dirt even after checking the bag.

256's more than big enough for the 15" macbook. I would suggest go for Tan, it's really the classic color for Filson 256 briefcase.
Olive color looks better for models that have more exposed zippers (i.e. 266 sportsman or maybe 258) due to the nice contrast between the brass colored zippers and dark olive twill.

Thanks for all the input - decided to go for a Tan 261 for the ladyfriend, and a Tan 256 for myself!

Sorry as I'm new to the forum - not sure about linking to retailers and eBay and things. Do remove as necessary. But does anyone have experience purchasing Filson off of eBay? It's quite a bit cheaper ($199/$184 BIN price at two different retailers) both with 1000+ feedback, 99.9% positive.... wondering how they're able to sell at such a discount for brand new, authentic merchandise - what's the catch?

i.e. http://www.ebay.com/itm/291533420189?_trksid=p2060353.m2763.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Thanks!

Code "FALLAT30OFF" for 30% off Filson, plus free shipping, no tax. I see the 24 hour bag, 48 hour bag, and the new carry on size medium duffle ... black ONLY. I purchased the 24 hour bag, looks like it will make a nice daily office bag. http://www.toddsnyder.com/search?q=filson
