Filson Bag Thread: With Pictures - Page 384

Damn, this information is making me more and more confused.

I think I'm going to rule out the medium travel bag because of the 18" length, a 20" long duffle like the medium makes things like tossing in a folded over sportcoat easier. Shame because I like the overall design of the travel much more. My current weekender is identical dimensions to the medium duffle and has worked perfectly, just looking for a nicer bag.

That leaves me with colour. I thought I had settled on navy, but the above comments about thinness have me concerned. Does it feel significantly cheaper in quality? How well does the otter green look in a more formal setting, or is it on the rustic side?

I use an otter green 256 for work, but would prefer not bring it to formal meeting. Though I have.

Navy 258 incoming.  It should be a great compliment to my strand collection double flap briefcase from AE

I've been searching for the perfect bag for years, and have gone through a number of different styles, companies, materials, and more. I know there will never be a perfect bag, but I have a question for Filson owners as I look for the next best thing. First, some context:

My EDC includes a camera (now mirrorless) with a lens attached and maybe one more lens. I have an extreme dislike for camera bags, both in terms of aesthetic and utility. I find I'd rather pack my gear as needed than slot it into rectangular holes. And those Velcro dividers? Maddening to position satisfactorily.

Beyond a camera, I also sometimes, but not always, carry either a 13" MacBook Air or, for complicated reasons, a 15" retina MacBook Pro.

I have considered Filsons before, but I always have this feeling I'm going to be disappointed. See, I love the apparent size and aesthetic of the 232 field bag. It is basically what I want. But... there's that 15" MacBook.

The 24 hour tin cloth briefcase would seem to be more fitting for my needs. It seems a bit roomier front-to-back than Filson's other briefcases. But I'm worried about the zippers and shoving a camera into and jerking it out of the bag. I don't baby my gear, but Filson's zippers are scary looking, and there's no need for unnecessary damage. Plus, I'm not a huge fan of zippers anyway. And I'm a bit worried about the storm flap not covering the full size of the zipper. The 232 has one big flap with buckles, and I like that.

And, importantly for long-term satisfaction, I find the 232 to be gorgeous. The 24 hour (and all Filson's briefcases) are decent-looking to me, at best.

So, with that context, my question is: is it possible to fit a 15" retina MBP into the 232? Internal dimensions seem to suggest it should fit, but that narrow opening on top suggests otherwise. Does anyone have both the 232 and a 15" and has tried this? Would it fit if the bag is empty (and therefore presumably more pliant)?

I don't want to get the 24 hour and then regret not getting the one I really wanted. But I also don't want to have to move things to another bag that fits the 15" when I need it.

Thank you!

I personally do not have the Filson Medium Field Bag (232), but this link will give you insight into its use as a laptop bag: https://filsonfan.com/2012/11/14/mini-review-filson-field-bag-232/

In the review, it says a 13" MacBook Air will NOT fit.

I agree with you about the use of camera bags.  I use a Filson Small Field Bag for my EDC...I use a regular dslr and keep that on my shoulder while storing an additional lens in the bag.  Depending on which mirrorless system you use, you might be able to fit the entire camera (with lens on) and an additional lens in the bag.

The big issue for you is the laptop.  With the exception of large video files and complex email requests, I handle much of my activities through my phone.  Of course it isn't optimal, but the ability to save my back is more important.

Forgot to mention, the now discontinued Filson x Magnum Harvey Messenger Bag might also work for your needs.

Unsure if it fits the look you want, and yes, it is a camera bag...but the insert is removable.

I have a 232 and a 13" macbook air. The MBA without a cover or protective sleeve will just fit. I don't think that a 15" macbook pro would fit.

I just placed an order for the Small Duffle Bag in Otter Green.
I already have a Journeyman Backpack and the Original Briefcase (Apolis edition).
I can't wait to extend my Filson bags with this new duffle icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

"Built with a full tang for superior strength"

I suppose this pocket knife is worth $700 after all, given that Filson has apparently found a way to make a full tang folding knife...

Great find there! Just what I need to buy as companion to my $600 shinola watch!

While you're at it, don't forget to add this $150 horseshoe set, which Filson's marketing department would no doubt have you believe was forged in the fire of Odin's very own butthole directly next to mjolnir: http://www.filson.com/horseshoes-20017128.html

Never mind that it appears to be the exact same set as this one, which is less than half the price: https://www.amazon.com/St-Pierre-Presidential-Horseshoe-Set/dp/B0000ASN01/ref=sr_1_10

Guys. Was traveling through Detroit and they just opened a store there about a month ago (May 2016). I just spent the better part of an hour handling every bag in the damn place.

Not as big as the Seattle store, I'm sure, but if you find yourself traveling through Detroit, it's worth the trip! Right next door to Shinola's flagship Detroit sale.

On a separate note, I picked up a tablet briefcase which is so mis-named it's funny. Guys a MacBook Air 13" easily.
