Filson Bag Thread: With Pictures - Page 378

I don't quite understand the Filson approach to their luggage line. They retire time tested functional bags like the 266 Sportsman, medium and large travel bag, the compartment bag and then replace with more esoteric bags that make me scratch my head.

Here's one - the Excursion Bag. Okay, I sort of get it - you carry muddy, wet stuff in this bag. And the U shaped zipper is good. But not sure if it's a an improvement over the earlier sportsman models especially with lighter tin cloth and a higher price.

What's up filson thread followers? Need some opinions/help from those of you who have experience with carry on filson luggage.

I am looking for the best option for a carry-on to take with me to New York/Toronto for a little over a week. I dress very minimally so there is not much to pack (t shirts, 2 pairs of jeans, etc). I own the pullman bag but I'm afraid it won't pass airline carry on restrictions.

Budget is not an issue in this case (Filson is very reasonably priced as it is). Want to hear any experience anyone might have with a Filson bag that best suits a carry on option

Thanks!

If you can find one, I like the (discontinued) Large Carry On best for this purpose.

I have the Meridian duffle and found the size to be more than adequate for a weeklong trip. I used it for a weeklong trip to the East Coast and it was packed full. I didn't have any problems with passing carry-on restrictions but I had to use a little bit of effort to place it into the overhead bin. I even placed it into United's carry-on sizing bin they have outside of the gates to see if it fitted and it did with a little bit of effort.

Comparing the Pullman bag with the Meridian, they are almost the same size...if I was in your position, I would just use the Pullman and don't pack it full.

I have no experience with other Filson bags other than the 48-hour duffle which may be too small for your trip duration even for a light packer.

Re: carryon. If you like the Pullman design, but find it too big as a carryon, there is now a small Pullman model. About the same size as the discontinued large carryon mention earlier.

If you want a duffle style bag, the newly redesigned medium duffle is maximum carryon sized. I have the Meridian - which like the 48h duffle was clearly designed by Filson as an airline carryon, Consequently, I think the design is excellent for a larger carry-on bag as it's tall, narrow, light with good capacity so easier to carry while walking around the terminal than some other designs.

Thanks for all the advice folks!

I have seen the Meridian in person and it's a very nice bag. If you guys say it's a great carry on bag I'll take your word for it

jthom.  I bought the Meridian a couple months ago and have traveled with it extensively.  Long weekends in the car, and business trips ranging from between 2 and 5 days.  It's easily become my favorite Filson bag.  In fact, I just packed it a few minutes ago for a 7 day trip to S. Florida.

If you get the bag, I highly recommend the Eagle Creek folders for packing.  In fact, they fit beautifully inside the bag - almost as if they were designed for it.

The only negative that I see is that it does suffer from a good amount of denim transfer - perhaps because of the lighter-weight material.

In any case - it's a great bag.  Really like it.  Carries well, fits inside the overhead bins (even the smaller ones on regional planes as long as the bag isn't totally full) and is sized quite perfectly for a typical 2-5 day trip.

Hello,

How wide is the main section of the 256 and 256? I'm trying to decide I'm trying to decide between the two, and I want to see if everything I want to carry around will fit in the 256. I listed the main items I want to have with me below.

For work/school

laptop

charger

mouse

textbook

notebook

water bottle

snack/lunch

Travel

ipad

compact umbrella

camera

book

water bottle

snack/lunch

Depending on your lunch size, that should definitely fit in a 256.  I own a 257 and it could easily handle double of everything you list (but be damn heavy).

Yeah based on what you're carrying, should be fine with the 256 actually. The 257 has quite a lot more room available but having had one I found it just ends up being too big and heavy and the 256 holds as much as you should probably be carrying around like that anyway. Comes down to the occasionally just that bit too snug 256 versus the always too big 257.

256 would fit it. I use mine daily and carry laptop, ipad, fucking huge laptop charger, pistol, glucose monitor, 2 phones and phone chargers. still fits in fine with room to cram in other small stuff.
