Did you punch a shorter hole in the shoulder strap?

My inclination is to go with the 257, but if all this will fit in the 256 and not feel cramped, I might look at it instead.

Thanks!

No need for the 257 in your case; go with the 256. I have a 257 that I love, but I need it for my 17" MBP.

with one normal to thick textbook and a padded laptop, some folders and notebooks, everything is pretty tight. i prefer the snug, tetris style to roomy just because i'd rather have compactness over bulk. but it also takes a little adjustment because it's harder to just "throw" things into the bag. also a water bottle barely fits after everything is in there and needs to be placed sideways under the flap and the bag left unzipped.

i would think that all the stuff you mentioned may feel cramped. a two small books fits perfectly in there but add another textbook and it's pretty much packed. just know that it's not going to feel like a roomy sack that you can just easily throw things into. you'll have to set things in there in a way so that you'll have space for everything else.

with that said, i decided on the 256 simply because it would be pretty uncomfortable to carry anything more than its capacity. walking for a distance with 2 or 3 textbooks, a laptop, and some other shit using just your one shoulder sucks. better to have backpack if you're carrying all that.

257 would have definitely been too big for me and the type of things I want to use it for (basically to throw in a book, couple magazines, netbook, etc.)

But anyway, love the quality, the leather, the canvas, the hardware.

Send your 256 back to Filson. They can install a handgrip for $20.

A few scans to contribute.

Medium Field Bag - relatively new

257 Brief after about 6months of use

I don't remember where I grabbed these pictures, otherwise I would give them proper credit. It might have been here or from a random Google search. I have them marked as a Filson 258 and the color appears to be Otter Green. Edited to add: I also found an Otter Green one for sale on ebay. I have no affiliation with the sale, but I knew people here wanted an Otter Green picture. Granted it's not the best, but hopefully it will give a good idea.

I got the 257 from Crane's a couple of months ago. From what you described, I would say that the 257 would hold those items comfortably. Personally, I like having some extra room in case I need to take that extra file or book or even lug two laptops. My guess is that, based on the bag's dimensions, the 256 would make for a snug fit. And remember, since both bags only unzip to about a quarter of the way down the side, taking things in and out of a snug bag may not always be a smooth transaction. My vote would be the 257.

I have yet to see any pictures of the brown Filson bags after some use and a little broken-in. Thought this might be of interest. The bags fade very nicely from the dark brown and this gives greater contrast between the trim and the bag. I have gotten a number of compliments on the bag and get more as it has become more worn.

Yup the owner of the bag contacted me and said that he had a local leather shop make a new thicker strap using custom but similar bridle leather that was thicker and still used the original metal pieces.

I just saw your question on my Filson bag. Sorry, I don't
check Flickr often. Feel free to post on filson style site.
The strap was one I had made at local leather shop. The
wider one I made was just more comfortable. They used the
same Filson hardware and matched the leather as close as
possible. I'm thinking of the brown one - I like the new
brown color the best.
Thanks

it looks nice albeit still brand new. LOL.. the brown does look more "formal" (well as much as a canvas bag can look formal) than the tan and the olive green.

i guess it will take years of hard use to get that super broken in look.
