It's only the small handle you pull on which I don't like. The zipper teeth are fine. A small detail, but for some reason it irritates me but definitely not so much I don't enjoy the bag.

V
intage Filson #257. The zipper is shot but it's a great old briefcase.

Rumor spreadin' 'round in this Texas town...

Is that Filson is bringing back styles 264 and 265 (Compartment and Large compartment case), nearly doubling the price and adding padding/spacing for cameras.

As an aside, there are two style 264 bags, brand new, at a local shop. These were discontinued in 2010 and I could only talk the shop owner into 10% off the original price of $225, so I had to pass.

Have you tried sending it back to Filson to see if they will repair or replace the zipper ?

I phoned them and sent photos. They won't replace a briefcase zipper. I then asked to purchase just the zipper so I could have it replaced on my end. The answer was NO. I'm not feeling any Filson customer service love. I sent a polite personal letter to the CEO requesting a zipper so we'll see what happens.

Badass! Epic. How old would you say?

Assuming that it is not a second, that seems a shame. Particularly so about not sending you a zipper, seeing as they have sent out free leather hand grips in the recent past. Did they mention replacing the briefcase or did they simply indicate no repair or replacement would be offered ?

Filson customer service has always been good about repair, but realistically there has to be a limit to the duration of their warranty.

Thanks a bunch.

If anyone wants photos of anything particular just let me know via a PM.

Cheers!

Rust-Oleum 7274830 Metallic Spray, Antique Brass

Actually, I wouldn't recommend it, but how about some other form of covering for the pullers:
  • Leather strips stitched into coverings
  • Heat shrink tubing
  • Plasti-dip

Leather will likely look the best wink.gif

From what they told me zippers are installed before the rest of the bag is assembled, so there's no easy way to disassemble the bag to install a zipper, and there's no way for it to lay flat enough to sew, etc. The zipper is sandwiched between the leather and canvas. It'll be difficult but I'll do it one way or the other if the Filson CEO will authorize sending me a zipper. If not then I'll get one from another source if I have to. I'm not giving up on this bag.

Incidentally, I'm not asking for free warranty repair. I would gladly pay for the repair and the zipper but they have declined both.  Here's another shot.

Thanks for the clarification. Fingers crossed that you get a zipper ASAP.

Just to be clear, are you saying they are declining to do a repair that would replace the zipper, but would still replace the whole bag for you? Or that they won't replace the bag for a broken zipper? Generally if they can't do a repair, they'll just give you a new bag. I would be very, very surprised if they were unwilling to do that. Hell, I had a bag with a bent snap on a removable piece, and they said that most likely they'd just be replacing the whole bag.

While it sucks that you have to lose the patina and wear, Filson totally has their responsibility covered if they are willing to just give you a new one.

They said it might qualify for replacement but I wouldn't trade it for 5 new bags. The bottom line is 1.) they will not replace the zipper either for pay or for free and 2.) will not sell me a zipper that I can have put in by someone else. I can understand them not wanting to install it as it looks very tricky, but I can't understand them not selling me zipper. I've been a Filson customer for years and years. Hopefully my letter to the CEO will at least get me a zipper!

IIRC from a blog posting on the manufacturing of 256, zipper sewn into leather strips is one of the first steps of manufacturing the briefcase which is followed by sewing of other panels then flipping the bag inside-out. I can see why the company would refuse to repair- not because they are evil, but it just doesn't make sense on their part rather than giving a replacement model.
There is a famous zipper specialist in Chicago who will repair/replace/add zippers as long as you source the zipper. You might have better luck going to her, but it will cost more than the bag itself.
I would keep the bag, retire it, then get a new bag- maybe in different color just to see how far that one goes this time.
