Filson Bag Thread: With Pictures - Page 236

Update after 5 weeks of using Navy 256.

I've been getting compliments almost everyday, mostly from women, but also from guys as well. It is perfect for my needs in carrying a notebook, laptop, charger, and some papers. I kind of wish there was only one divider so there is only two compartments, a bigger one and a smaller one.. I carry it by the strap most of the time, and only carry it occasionally by the handles. When I carry it by the handles is when they are noticed most and get the most compliments.  The otter green and tan definitely look more interesting and I was contemplating switching to one of those. However after using it day to day, I realized that the navy is perfect for the relatively conservative work environment in which I use it.

I purchased a filson rucksack on a whim (to use with business attire) that I am thinking about selling. If I do end up using it though, I know that the briefcase will still be used like 99% of the time. This has got to be one of my favorite buys in the last year.

I really would go back to Filson briefcase in a heartbeat if they had softer zipper teeth :/

Why don't you like the zippers as they are?

256 owners
do you find the straps get in the way when using the shoulder strap?

Does anyone have a real-world comparison between the rugged twill medium field bag and the tin cloth version? It seems they both look kinda saggy when not fully loaded but the tin might be better suited for light city trips.

The stuff I carry in my SL bag:

For the 257, I have to downsize and leave some behind. I should have gone for the 258.

I don't use case for my electronics, nor am I a very careful person. So it's no biggie, but one day I noticed hairline-like scratches on my iPad and mbp. I also do not like the feeling of the zippers grinding(?) on my knits or other soft clothing when I reach for things inside the bag. Now I am looking for a brief with strap/buckle so I don't have to deal with that. But then I might be spoiled from all the buttery smooth zippers of riri / YKK excella from other stuffs.

Just bought a Filson Original Briefcase in Otter Green. I had a Polo Ralph Lauren Canvas & Leather messenger bag but it was often too big for the number of things I carried around. Came across Filson by accident when I saw their bags in a store and was instantly hooked. Now, a few weeks later I'm the happy owner of their Original Briefcase.

I'm looking forward to it begins develop patina.

Here are a few images although most of you already know how it looks...

A little detail which I don't like. For some reason I don't like the zippers. Or their handles to be precise. I would have liked to see them in the same finish as the clasps and d-rings. They look too shiny and bling-bling. For some reason this kinda bugs me. Anyway, this bag is almost perfect. This bag even goes very well with a suit and tie I can imagine. At least the ones in darker colors.

Here's a list of what my Original Briefcase contains...

Umbrella (always)
Gloves (only when cold or a chance of rain)
MacBook Pro Retina 13"
1-2 books
1 notebook/sketchbook
1 calendar/diary
Newspaper
iPhone 4S
2-3 pens
Keys
A magazine or catalogue (occasionally)

This is what I carry around almost daily.

The zippers need to be as clean and as smooth as possible for ease of operation.I think that the aged finish on the clasps and D-rings is some form of an artificial (laquer, maybe?) finish. Having such a substance as that on the zipper is not a good idea as it will come off with wear and impede the operation of the zipper.

Up until recently Filson were using YKK zippers, my 258 has YKK I believe. Same metal & finish and just as abrasive to delicate items.

RIRI being used in some (all?) bags now - http://www.styleforum.net/t/133759/filson-bag-thread-with-pictures/2775#post_6623813

Yeah. My 256, Duffles and tote all have huge YKK on them as well. Interesting how they changed zipper suppliers. I wonder how their new bags look/feel with RIRI's as I find them more smooth and polished than industrial YKKs.

Just recently discovered Filson and I am totally hooked! Purchased a tan 256 two weeks ago and an otter green 260 this week. I'm an attorney and I use my 256 everyday in court. It's perfect for carrying files, pens, pads of paper, my iPad and other odds and ends. I think the bag works well with a suit and I've received several compliments from judges and other attorneys I work with. The 256 is for carrying my daily needs while at work and the 260 for all other times. I can see the 260 working well as a gym bag, diaper bag, and all around utility bag. Looking forward to adding more Filsons to my collection as the years go by.

Great photos of the green 256. "Real life" pictures are always more attractive and true to the product.
