You can get the handle from the 257/8 installed on the 256 for $20.I would also like to know more about this grip.

Just a note, I use the handgrip on the 256 uninstalled. The leather is rigid enough so that it maintains its curved shape and stays on one of the straps when you buckle and unbuckle it, haven't had any problems with it falling off or anything. this way I can choose to use it or remove it later.
It may have been covered in this thread already, but:
Is there anything I need to do to treat the canvas/twill on the Ruck-sack?
It's Portland, so I will be wearing this on my motorcycle through the rain a lot, if that matters. Was thinking maybe silicone spray?
anyone have any comments on using the large travel bag vs the medium duffel?
They are almost the same dimensions over all, duffel is alittle longer, travel bag is alittle wider but has alot more interior and exterior organizational pockets. I have a feeling it would be easier to use but not so good to carry.
Plus the duffel has cleaner lines I suppose. Thoughts?
Ok, thanks for the reply. I guess I'll get the regular Filson rucksack in that case. The only thing I'm worried about is if the shoulder straps will end up digging in, like someone else mentioned in this thread. I plan on using the rucksack mostly for travelling, which means holding a sweater, some food and water, travel book, etc. In the end, it could get pretty heavy. Has anyone else had this kind of problem? Do you know of anyway I could get pads for the shoulder straps to prevent this from happening?
my 257 arrived today. i was surprised it has a hefty weight to it. No arguments though as it is a well made bag and ill have to spend some time breaking it in as it's very stiff out of the box.
