I own a filson 256 with the extra handle grip and I think it is 100% worth it, if you can afford to go without your bag for a short while, get the grips, and don't worry about converting to a 257 anymore. For me unless you are carrying clothing or other light items, filling a 257 to capacity with electronics and books will break your shoulders... at which point you are better off with a backpack (or the filson rucksack)

Anyone still need/want photos of the 257? Filled with?
It's a bit big for my taste.

1. Does the 256 fit a 13" MBP?
2. Anyone have a tan 256 w/handle for trade for my tan 257? Almost new.
3. Anyone have a tan rucksack for trade for my tank 257? Almost new.

So the 256 doesn't come with the connecting piece between on the handles anymore? It looks like the 257 does.

No, but Filson can add one for you, as can some of the retailers. Have a look a few pages back where this was discussed as an option when ordering.

Yes - it will fit the 13" MBP without a problem. The new 15" retina MBP on the other hand is a very tight squeeze.

I fit a 17" MBP into my 256. No laptop sleeve or additional padding, but it will fit in.

Thanks milw! I'll give them a call and see if they can give me the "part number" to order one.

How sure are you? I'm getting the retina and the 256. The 257 definitely seems too big.

How sure? I have a 256 and a 15" retina MBP. When I put the retina MBP in either of the internal side pockets, it takes some manipulation to get in - like I said, it's a tight squeeze. If you are going to put the MBP in the center compartment it should go in fine but for me, that would make the bag a lot less useful for me. If you keep putting the MBP in the internal side pocket it'll probably loosen a little over time

If the 257 is too heavy you might consider cutting it down. By removing the interior pockets, cutting down the shoulder strap to be only as long as you need it to be ad by not using the shoulder strap pad you could save some weight. Outer pockets could also be carefully removed to get to weight of 256.

I've decided to buy the 256. Do you know where I can get one with added (257) handles, fair price and shipping to Europe? Thanks.

Edit: I think I'll get it from Cranes. I have e-mailed them about how to proceed with payment for the added handles. Not sure of what color to get though...

Anyone know where you can pick up the navy special edition briefcase for a good price? Found one place carrying it, but no way am I going to drop $500 on one.

Also, is it based on the 256 or 257?
