Hi there, I just found this site: http://www.filsonitaly.it/

Is it possible that Filson sold a licence to italy, like Woolrich and other Brands did before ....? Anybody out there who knows more about Filson Italy?

Merci flo

I have the same cracks on a 4 day old 256. Did you get yours resolved? Thanks!

The cracking/chafing on the underside of the leather is normal, according to Filson. To keep the top (the finished side) from following suit, get a good leather conditioner and work it into your leather both top side and bottom side) every month or so. After the first couple of times, you'll really start to notice a difference.

Going with a briefcase for school.
256 vs 257?

Trying to think of what I bring to school. At max.
Macbook 13", 2-3 compositions, 1-1.5" binder, 2-3 notebooks.

I currently have a North Face Recon for a bag if that helps to compare?
Color thoughts? Planning to go with tan, but I've seen some really nice photos of both the brown/olive.

Tan is a superb colour; even better in person than in pics.

Have been using a 257 for law school without issue. I carry my 11" vaio TZ, 1 or 2 2" casebooks, a yellow pad, and sometimes a 1/2" supplement..

256 would be too small for my needs and the large, padded briefcase would be too big. 257 is just right.

EDIT: Done reading through all 87 pages!

Great reference photos on pg45. Those need to be edited into the OP.
So 256 is a great everyday bag that is rigid and balanced, the 257 is more floppy but more room (what I need for school). The 258 doesn't seem as popular and it seem waaay too big for school.

Thanks for the replies. Going with tan now
Still not sure about the 257 or 258. 257 seems perfect but may be too small at times.

This is prob the most I'll carry: http://tinypic.com/r/msi3jl/6 + 13" MBP + mischelly stuff + water bottle... can someone recreate something similar to this?

Cranes still giving the best prices on these? eBay not bringing up many good ones, but someone selling for $200-220

I feel like the 256 vs. 257 debate is discussed on this thread more than anything else. Personally, I love my 256. I borrowed my brother-in-laws 257 a couple weeks ago just to see if it would be worth it to make the switch. Honestly, the additional pockets are handy but ultimately not needed. I carry a laptop, laptop charger, a couple phones (1 personal and 1 work) a tablet, 1" portfolio, business cards, a couple notepads, some keys, a stack of note cards, and usually a stack of papers or two. I have no trouble fitting all of these in my bag comfortably.

View my post on pg. 79 to see how spacious my 256 is.

If you want a first quality brand new bag then yeah we're one of the top places to go. If you don't find the company you want to deal with in Filson's dealer locator beware. Same goes for fleabay. A lot of seconds are passed off as first quality not to mention there are outright knockoffs floating around as well.

Knockoffs ?

As in faked bearing the Filson name or just similarly styled ?

Yep. They're relatively uncommon but they are out there. The bigger problem is seconds being sold as firsts.

Is there any reputable place to get seconds of the Filson 256? :)

Filson has a "Factory Store" that they just opened in Burlington, WA. Essentially it's a store full of seconds and vintage Filson gear (I haven't had the chance to go up there yet). Most items are 40%-60% off the retail price.

I'm not sure if they'll ship orders due to the fact that they can't guarantee the shape of the product you're getting, but you can give it a try. Their number is (360) 503-1897
