One other 257 question: I've never seen a detailed image of the interior to see that these large accessory "pockets" are open on the bottom. It's hard to imagine that this happened by accident, so I have to assume this is as designed. These would be perfect to hold a mouse, external hdd etc. if they had a bottom. Being bottomless, it seems those items would just slide out and end up in a pile at the bottom of the bag. Is this consistent with how yours are designed? If so, how to do you use these?

Admittedly, with 70pgs I'd only read backwards through the thread...thanks for the correction. So I see the bottomless pockets are documented, so my question is just how useful they are as designed and if anyone has modded them to reliably hold smaller items.

See the first post of this very thread.

Just for clarification... the pockets in the front, zippered compartment of the 258 are a mix of closed and open-bottom. There are 4 various-sized open-bottom pockets and 2 closed-bottom pockets. 1 of the closed-bottom pockets is fairly large and would easily hold an external HD and/or a mouse. The other closed-bottom pocket is fairly small, but large enough to hold a couple thumb-drives, pack of gum, etc. so those things do not end up swimming around the bottom of your bag. That pocket is also perfectly sized for business cards and I imagine that's what it was designed for. The 4 pen pockets are also closed-bottom. While I would have preferred more closed-bottom pockets, I do appreciate having at least one fairly large open-bottom to hold my laptop charger.

Cheers, Dean

Received my 257 from Glen Outdoors for under $200...and I am very impressed. I have a few Jack Spades but there is something very ORIGONAL about these Filsons that make me excited to begin the breaking in process...

Is it recommended to spray something like Scotch-Guard on these to prevent dirt/spills/oils from messing up the fabric?

this is how all the 257's are, there is a mix of both open and closed pockets.

i find the open pockets are perfect for my sunglasses case...it fits nicely and doesn't fall out the bottom. i have also used the open pockets to hold a bottle of water, lotion, and a spare laptop battery....as long as the item you are holding is long enough it will extend to to the bottom of the bag and not fall out of place.

Filson recommends that for their Dry Finish tin cloth, so these twill bags should no different. I plan on doing it this weekend on my Tan 256, wish I had done it sooner.

does the 256 have those open pockets?

All 256 pockets are closed.

Anyone have any experience ordering from the US and shipping to Canada? Does Filson stuff get dinged with duties/taxes? Wanna get the Sportsman from Glen's.
