I was on the fence, too. Since I have the medium duffle already, I leaned towards the Sportsman because I wanted to try the U-shaped opening and because it looked different than my duffle. I really like the medium travel bag, but I just figured I'd try the Sportsman instead. I think I would have been happy with either one.

Thanks. That was a neat solution although I'll rather punch new holes.

Do you know how much that would cost?

does the medium travel bag look as nice as a medium duffle? i was thinking about getting one but online it looks like a fat short duffle bag to me.

does it looks better in person or am i better off with a medium duffle?

I've never seen the medium travel bag in person, but to me it looks like a cross between the medium duffle and the laptop/briefcase bag as far as shape goes. I like that it has the leather straps that wrap around the outside. I just think those look good. If you are torn between the two, I think it could come down to what you intend to use it for and how much you typically pack. If you pack a lot, want a bag to check when flying, or want a bag for car trips, then I'd go with the medium duffle. If you would rather a bag that you can carry on, then the medium travel bag will probably be better. As others have said the medium duffle is a bit too big for carrying on. You may be able to squeeze the medium duffle in an overhead if you don't fill it all the way up, but I can't say it would work for sure, unless you are in first class (less competition for overhead space) or are on a plane with big overhead compartments (international flights, United dreamliner, etc.). Others who have carried the medium duffle on or who have the medium travel bag could probably provide better insight.

Overall, if you like the look of the medium duffle and will mostly want to check or bring it in the car, then I'd say do with that. If you'd rather carry on most of the time, then it'd probably be better to get the medium travel bag or the sportsman bag. However, in true Styleforum fashion, you could always buy both with the intention of returning one, but then end up keeping both lol

It's backordered til 1st week of January, but I dont care. Im in no rush. Ive waited probably 3 years to finally take the plunge. I've spent more on jeans, so this price is crazy.
Make sure to post some pictures when it comes in. Anyone else have a Pullman they want to show off? smile.gif

If Joe's Sporting Goods can get their hands on one I think they are offering 20% off until 7 December.

Quick question for you all.  I got the Sportsman Bag in tan last year and I have noticed that the dye from my jeans have run off onto the bag.  How would I go about getting the dye off?

Also, ever since I got the bag I never treated it with any kind of protectant or anything.  Should I?  And if so, what would you recommend?

I have the duffle, the medium travel bag and the sportsman's bag. In my opinion, the Medium Travel Bag is one of the best all-around bags that Filson makes. It has two full-length interior pockets and four pockets on the outside of the case. When the bag is not completely full, it compresses neatly to take up less room, yet even when fully stuffed, it is still carry-on compliant.

The medium travel bag holds much more than the sportsman's bag even though they share similar exterior dimensions. I find the sportsman's bag to be nice for shorter trips, but I also find it to be divided up a bit too much for my liking. My biggest problems with the duffle bag are that the interior only has two small end pockets and there are no pockets on the outside of the bag. In addition, when not full, it gets really slouchy looking and doesn't carry well.

If I were to rank them, it would be as follows:

Medium Travel Bag > Sportsman's Bag > Medium Duffle

The Medium Travel Bag is such a hit around our household that my wife recently commandeered it and I was forced to order a second one in Otter Green that will arrive today. It is the perfect size, very easy to pack and has just the right amount of organization.

Uh oh. I wish I had ordered the travel bag.

i posted this a while ago but here are some of my medium travel bag pics. I've used internationally as a carry on...and a bunch of times domestically. but when its completely full to the brim it doesn't fit in a sizer so well but I've never been stopped...just kind of a second glance by a gate agent (it was on thanskgiving eve though where they are on the lookou):

Those are early pics when I first got it....I have been using it more recently for casual travel so hopefully breaking it in more.

How does the Pullman compare to the travel bag? Does it work as a carry-on?

Will BB allow me to exchange the large duffle and pay the difference (sale price difference) for the Pullman or travel bag when they become available again?

The Pullman is a very nice bag also, although it has a completely different layout than the travel bag. It opens flat and uses retention straps inside to hold folded clothes down as you close it. I find the medium travel bag to be more versatile (for the items I carry) due to its top-open layout. When I owned the Pullman, it was great for folded clothes, but it made packing loose or oddly shaped items (toiletry kit, souveniers, etc.) a little more difficult to contain.

I prefer the medium travel bag for my purposes, but the Pullman is certainly another great option if you tend to pack a lot of folded items:)
