We've only had a couple of cold and wet days since I purchased it, but it definitely did not disappoint!

would you mind posting some fit pics nod[1].gif

curious to see how filson apparel looks on person

Brown vs. tan is purely a matter of taste. I went with a brown 256 because it seemed more "discrete" and not so... Filson-y. That's my personal preference - the tan is definitely more striking, and since you mentioned that as a factor you might personally be disappointed with the brown after a while.

But there's no wrong answer with such a great bag!

My brother also got the green; strikes a nice balance between casual and boring.

To echo some of the prior comments, the straps on my Filson Rucksack are terrible, comfort-wise.

I'm going to have to figure out the best DIY solution to add padding, and I'm going to Lexol them this weekend to see if that will help some as I believe the leather is too stiff right now -  one side never seems to sit properly, no matter how I adjust, and digs into my lats.

Clothing wise, the Greenwood Woll Jacket is just badass and I'm saving to buy one. Size down, for sure.

Between those two I would go with the tan. I don't think the brown would age well.

Yes once the handgrip is installed, it is stitched on and can't be removed. You would probably need a seam ripper to unattach it.

I have had a brown 257 for about 2 years now and it looks awesome. I personally don't think the tan ages well for the first few years, it just looks dirty. After you pass that stage, it obviously looks great.

At first I was leaning towards the brown since I thought the tan might look too "casual," but the tan looks more striking in pictures. However, the tan seems like it might get dirty easily. Any thoughts?

Had tan 257, traded it for an otter one, like others said the perfect balance. Not too casual but not the standard briefcase color

^I agree.

Received today two 256, a otter and a tan, really love the otter colour that I keep for me, the tan in presence is too dark and brownish for my taste.

Thanks for the heads up!

Now I don't know which to get, 257 or 258. I picked up a very used 256 this weekend and initially thought I could use it as my daily office bag...but it's in rougher shape than I thought so don't think it's office suitable (previous owner was a geologist and beat the crap out of it) Still got it for a steal so will keep it around.

258 would be nice to use it as an overnight/weekend bag that I can carry my laptop/Kindle/clothes in one bag. I own a tin-cloth small duffel already but even that is a bit big for just one night. But realizing the 258 may be excessive for an everyday office bag.

Also does anybody know where to get a replacement shoulder strap? The 256 I picked up didn't have it. Does Filson sell them?

For me yes, but it's subjective.
I found tan colour great in many pictures seen on line but not so good in reality.
