Grilled Pron Part Trois - Grilled Eggs. That's right, grilled eggs

This may be a little too low brow for some here, but I thought I would share anyway. I did use French in the title to make it seem a little more refined than what it is!!

Has anyone had Scotch Eggs? It's an app served in some of the bars around St. Louis Basically, they take a hard boiled egg, wrap a layer of sausage around it and deep fry it for a couple of minutes to cook the sausage. They they slice them in half lengthwise and serve them with a honey mustard sauce. I love them.

I decided to take a stab at them the Grillin Fools way. So instead of deep frying them I smoked them and instead of a honey mustard dipping sauce I used BBQ sauce. It was sorta like an egg stuffed fatty. And as an added bonus, they reheat really well. Makes for a really quick breakfast of sausage and eggs. These are not recommended by your cardiologist and a side of angioplasty is often ordered as well with them!!!

Spread the sausage out and place the egg in the middle:

Coat them in some granulated garlic and fresh ground pepper:

On the grill with some ribs:

Sliced:

A little darker shot to see that smoke ring:

That looks pretty good. The Scotch egg I've had has runny yolk which I do like because of the creamy texture though. This seems like an interesting thing to try and toss into the mix to add variety at the next BBQ.

Never seen that before, interesting! I prefer a runny yolk myself, not sure how that would work.

This is my favorite, easy way to prepare an egg. I suppose you could do this on a grill, with a griddle.

How did you execute that ? Ever since V for Vendetta I've always wondered how that was done..

I bow to your grilling ingenuity.

And, fwiw, I am not one to bow to just anyone who can light a fire and park food atop it.

It's not too complicated.. Heat up skillet / grilddle, put in butter and swish around. Take a slice of bread, cut out a hole (I use a drinking glass (open side) and press it down into the middle of the bread and twist). Pop out the cut-out center and toast the bread on both sides in the skillet. Crack your egg and drop it in the hole. Cook it for a bit, then flip it *carefully*. Cook a bit more, and put it on a plate!

so easy, so good.... Thanks..

That does look like a tasty Scotch egg. Man, now I'm going to have to make some at home in the next few weeks.

FWIW, cooked the usual way, we egg wash and coat in panko, then pan fry. You have to make the sausage coating very thin, or the panko will burn before the meat is cooked.

The runny yolk thing is something I did too. The places that serve Scotch Eggs around here do not have them runny. I just figured this was they were done. But I love runny yolk so that would be excellent. I just don't know if I could pull it off. I smoked these things at about 240-250 for about 2 hours. Having never done these I just based it on how long I felt the sausage needed before it was done. I layered the sausage on pretty thick compared to what I get at bars. I wonder if there is a method I don't know about that makes it easier to get a thin layer of sausage around a slippery egg.

We're still stalking about Scotch eggs, right?

Scotch eggs are excellent. I made them a few times during frying parties with coworkers (we'd get a few beers, a turkey fryer, and whatever we could think of to throw in the fryer).

This method involves much less cleanup. Will have to give it a shot.

i love scotch eggs and haven't had one in years. The only place I saw them growing up was at the scotch tent at the Texas Folklife festival
