I think this is a rather cynical attempt by a distiller to capitalize on some ersatz "moonshine drinkin'" fantasies harbored by "city folk". I distill at home, and I've also tried this stuff, and there's not much similarity between the two. First, this product is obviously cut with water to achieve a 40% abv, as alcohol from the still is about 90% abv. Also, the flavor and intricacies of bourbon whiskeys come from the aging process, not the distilling. Yes, there is some flavor generated by the content of the mash and the fermenting conditions, but a premium bourbon will typically be at least 10 years old, and the flavor and conditions of the wood in which it is aged will be at the top of the taste profile. This stuff tasted pretty nasty as far as I remember, no personality to it and you could get the same effect by putting cheap vodka in a mason jar and tell your friends you bought it from an old shiner in Kentucky
