i want to buy one for my cousin who's birthday is coming up. he already has a lx3 and i want to get him something even more compact than that. just something he can put in his back pocket and take it out whenever he wants to take a picture of something. any suggestions?

I've had a great time with the Canon SD960. I took it on a couple trips and never missed my DSLR. Here's Cabel Sasser's review.

From extensive research, and I think Hunts and Dark will back me here it was extensive research, the Panasonic Lumix LX3 or the Canon Powershot G10. If the Lumix had a bit more telephoto, it would be the clear, clear winner, but it's 60mm limit gives the G10 some room to come in as a better all round camera.

as stated in the original post, my cousin already has the lx3. g10 is a little too big to put in the back pocket of any trouser/jean so that's out of the question. i'll check out the canon sd960. i've heard some good things about the canon ixus 980is. anyone have any thoughts on that? also what's the deal with ixus/sd? is it the same thing just called differently?

After a decent amount of research I bought my sis a Canon SD IS camera. Can't remember which one exactly cause there are so many models. Her only requirement was that it have an optical viewfinder and not just the screen. Reviews at the time said it's almost impossible to take a bad pic with it and she confirmed that after owning for a while. Bought my fiancee a later model as well and she also loves her own. Small and takes good pics.

if he's into photography that much you shouldn't buy him a camera. choosing a camera is a very personal decision and the odds of you choosing the one he would want for himself are very slim.

Ricoh GR-D2 or the zoom equivalent (forget the name)

IXUS is the non-US naming convention for Canon, it's the same as the SD line. For example, the SD960 in the US is the IXUS 110 outside of the US.

I'd second the recommendation for the Canon SD/IXUS series, especially with the image stabilization. Great and simple point and shoot for when you don't want to lug around the SLR, or worry about losing or dropping the more expensive lx3.

Not small enough. I have a GX100 (1st gen zoom G-series) and it isn't any more pocketable than an LX3.

If you don't mind memory sticks, the sony line of pocketables are very nice. Slim, slide cover, touch screen, and pretty good image quality.

I have an M8.2 and a D-Lux 4, which I understand is basically an LX3 for people who don't quibble about a mere couple of hundred dollars to lose those unsightly "OIS" and other stuff plastered all over an otherwise handsome machine. And I'm probably in the same boat as your cousin. Despite what the above choices might entail, I'm pretty much a point and shoot guy. The DL4 is actually very handy as a general point & shoot where I want a bit more control here and there, but I have found it lacking in many situations. a) The whole lens cap issue. More often than not, powering on the camera for a quick snapshot, I've missed it by forgetting to take off the lenscap and then having to go through the button press to get the camera shooting. b) It's compact, but sometimes not quite compact enough - especially with the nice leather case for it. Which is why I bought a Sony DSC-T900. Not the best camera out there by a long shot, but a perfect party camera. For me, pocketability and no-braineriness was the driving force for the purchase of this tertiary machine. If you want something with a balance between portability and 'photo nerd appeal' then perhaps the small Fujis may be more to your cousin's liking.
