Crab Cakes - Lump or Claw?

I've recently taken to making crab cakes. I really like the variety you can have - cornmeal, wheat flour, adding veggies, etc. I prefer claw, my girlfriend prefers lump. Since I am a mindless automaton, I figured I'd pose the question.

I'll try to add a poll, but never have before, so we'll see.

Congrats on your first successful poll
And it depends, but in general I prefer claw meat. IMO, it's like the "dark meat" of a crab. Less popular in most dishes, but more flavorful.

Lump, but I won't refuse claw. I'm a big fan of crab cakes.

Just curious, what do you use for the breading? I did a crazy mix tonight. I had the cornmeal out after making fried green tomatoes, so I used that, a slice-and-a-half of white bread, and the crumbs at the bottom of a doritos bag.

What would happen if I just used flour or just used cornmeal? Do I really need the bread?

I use a very small amount of fresh breadcrumbs in the actual cake--- I mostly like to use the best meat I can find and very little to detract from the flavor of the meat. Before cooking, I dredge it in panko. I enjoy it with a roasted red pepper and green onion remoulade.
Anyway, I don't imagine you really need the bread. I've never tried it without the bread, so I'd say give it a try once and see what happens. BTW, white bread, cornmeal, and doritos are insane

This is the best crab cake recipe I have seen by miles. It isn't traditional, but it is awesome. http://www.panix.com/clay/cookbook/b...?crab+recipe73

I made crab cakes last night. I used lump because it's what I found, but I don't really have a preference.

I'm not a big fan of claw meat, so if I had a choice, it'd always be lump meat.

Man, last time we were in the B-more-/D.C. corridor, we had several really good crab feasts. Best one was some little hole in the wall in Alexandria, Stan's Place. A little old surly Korean guy = Stan.

Fuck! I was just in Old Town earlier today. Where were you? Now, I'm back home in NYC. I could've destroyed some crabs.

This was a few years ago, so bare with me here. We stayed at the Embassy Suites at the last Metro stop. Can't remember the name of the stop, but it's right at the foot of old town in Alexandria. We asked someone working the desk, and she suggested this place. It wasn't a long cab ride, and it was one or two streets over, about 7-8 minutes from the Embassy Suites.
