Alot of people think they are competent barbors. But in reality, good ones are not that common and it sucks to have to find someone decent since you end up looking like a porcupine every single time until you locate someone you like. You'll be surprised how many 'professionals' can mess up your hair (unless you are not picky.. which I assume is not the case, since you ARE on styleforum)

One of the best haircuts I've ever had was done in 1997 at a NY barber school ... I don't remember the address ... I think in the teens around First or Second Ave.

I think part of the reason my hair doesn't get screwed up is because I get my hair cut very frequently once I find something I like. I used to have longer hair and that is quite easy to maintain, and what I have no is equally easy. I just get it cut often and by the same guy.

+1

Part of the reason for the initial inquiry is to find someone who can handle straight hair that is prone to sticking up when cut too short, especially towards the apex of your head... I'm not quite looking for the Derek Zoolander..

+1 Freeman's. They shave my head for something like $10, I think. If you actually have hair it's less than $50.

When I lived in NYC about 7 years ago I used to go to Chelsea Barber and paid $25.

I've been shaving my own head for the past year so I guess I'm a pretty fucking manly man. Sweeeeeet.

I just came back from Barber's Blueprint on Mulberry. Good people all around, just not quite good with my type of hair. Although i'm not asian, i have straight asian type of hair and he just didn't know what he was doing...it came out pretty dam bad, but you live and you learn.. It's a good thing I have a pretty decent hat game and, thankfully, my hair will grow back in about 2-3 weeks. It's a cheap price point and if you need a simple cut or shave and you're in the area, i'd recommend it. I'm going to try a chinatown location next, just not quite sure which from the lot that were suggested here..
