A restaurant in downtown Charlottetown is trying to raise sartorial standards.

The Globe, which opened on Victoria Row behind Confederation Centre last month, is telling men that baseball caps are not to be worn in its dining room.

General manager Steve Barber said the restaurant is trying to go a little more up-market.

"It's not a very heavy dress code. We just ask that you don't wear ball hats. We don't ask you to leave if you have jeans on or deck shoes, by any means," said Barber.

"If you came to my mom's house to have dinner, she'd ask you to take your hat off too."

Victoria Row is a popular summer destination, with a number of restaurants competing for attention. Patrons of the row had mixed opinions about whether the dress code would work for the restaurant.

"It's really kind of stupid. We're in Charlottetown," said one. "I was out in a boat all evening. I really don't feel like walking around looking like Krusty the Clown "” that's why I've got a hat on."

But another diner liked the idea.

"It's nice to have some place where you know what the clientele is going to be," he said.

Barber said the restaurant also prefers that men wear collared shirts, and is suggesting to patrons in T-shirts that they consider a collared shirt for their next visit, but is not insisting on collars as part of its dress code.

Good luck with that. It's PEI.
